Hillbilly Wisdom

Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight, and bull-strong. Keep skunks, bankers, and politicians at a distance. Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor. Words that soak into your ears are whispered, not yelled. The best sermons are lived, not preached. If you don’t take the time to do it right, you’ll find the time to do it twice. Don’t corner something that is meaner than you. Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you. It doesn’t take a very big person to carry a grudge. You can ..read more

The Real Significance of Christmas
Trinity Baptist Church
by Wayne Grant
1y ago
As November rushes into December, the pressure of approaching Christmas drives us into a hectic pace. Our attention is flooded with the pace of shopping, decorating, parties, and school vacation. The relentless activity pushes thoughts of the original Christmas story to the outskirts of our thinking. None of these activities are bad in themselves, but in their swirl, we are in danger of losing the real significance of Christmas. So, is Christmas simply a happy, yet over-stressed holiday? Yes, for many people, it is. But, it need not be for you and me. Indeed, many pressures distract us from ..read more

I Want to Go Where Everybody Knows My Name!
Trinity Baptist Church

“I want to go where everybody knows my name!” These words from the theme song of a popular 1980s sitcom resonate with me as I reflect on my first two months as Interim Minister of Older Adults. Everyone generally wants to be known by name. I am in the process of learning many names and connecting them to faces. Knowing names marks the beginning of learning personal storyies, both past and present, and of building relationships with others. This takes time. Another part of being new in any place or position of responsibility requires embracing what currently exists and meets a need. Our older a ..read more

Keeping Our Vision Clear

Driven by the desire to update my sunglasses, I recently scheduled my annual ophthalmology check-up. Thankfully, I received a great report, except for the usual, “we’re still waiting for your cataracts to ripen.” Then came the assessment of my vision for new lenses. The assistant, detecting minimal change in my eyesight, recommended only a slight prescription change. She stated that I could still see “well enough” if I wanted to continue wearing my current glasses. When the receptionist did not provide the new prescription at check-out, I asked for a copy. In my view, seeing slightly better ma ..read more

Whom Do You Admire?
Trinity Baptist Church

I learned as a newborn Christian that observing the life of a faithful Christ follower encouraged me in my walk. God blessed me with a man worthy of my admiration. “It is the greatest joy of my life to hear that my children are consistently living their lives in the ways of truth” (3 John 1:4 TPT). Blessed are those who have a good example to follow. Who comes to mind in your life? This man of God pastored multiple churches over his life after coming to terms with our Lord and Savior at an early age. Though many serve the Lord graciously and faithfully through thick and thin, Bob has done so w ..read more

Who Are God’s Children?
Trinity Baptist Church
by Robert Wood

Allan Dreyer, former Trinity church member and legendary Rock House Alumni writes: We have all probably heard the phrase, “We are all God’s children.” It is a nice sentiment, but it is actually not true. While we are all created by God and created in His image, we are His creation, and He does love us all, but we are not all sons of God. This doesn’t mean that we all cannot become God’s children. In fact, God desires for us all to come to Him and call Him our Father, even call him Dad or Daddy. Because of His love for us and desire to be called upon as our Father, He allows us to seek Him and ..read more

Mountains & Valleys: When Depression Comes
Trinity Baptist Church
by Ashton Hall

Contrary to popular belief, Christians are not immune to depression. Many believers feel ashamed to talk about it because they think spiritual people should “have faith” and never feel depressed. The truth is, depression is a recurring theme throughout Scripture, and we can learn much if we are willing to take a closer look. One example is the prophet Elijah, who, despite his great faith, went from a mountain top spiritual high into a deep valley of depression. The Mountain Top Elijah had experienced one miracle after another. God had sent ravens to feed him. A widow and her son provide ..read more

The Family – Growing Through Memory
Trinity Baptist Church

“I remember when…” These words are usually said with pleasure. Occasionally they may be uttered with pain. Memory, the ability to store, retain, and recall information and experiences, is a fundamental component of human personality. Most of us take memory for granted. But when we do think about it we realize this ability to remember is a great gift as well as a great mystery. Memories, the pleasurable ones and the painful ones, give color and content to our life. Without memory life would be flat, one-dimensional, without meaning. Memory allows us to know where we have been and, therefore, kn ..read more

Seeds to be Sown

The moment captured me years ago, but seems like yesterday. He spoke of his childhood on the Texas coast, and being a recipient of the State Mission Board activities. Dr. Albert Reyes was sharing his testimony with my local congregation and said, “If you put dimes and nickels in those little old time offering envelopes, my salvation and my being here today is the result.” Bam! It hit me. I was a Texas kiddo putting dimes and nickels in those envelopes. I was taught the importance of doing so, but never had I been face to face with the result. That moment’s impact ..read more

The Family – God’s Design

Honor your father and mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you. (Exodus 20:12)  This Fourth Commandment reminds us that God’ s plan places the family unit at the foundation of all human relationships. In the Genesis story of creation, God established the home before there was ever a temple, a synagogue, or a church. (Genesis 2:21-25) The family unit existed before any organized religious activity or civil government. This fact was made real to me recently when Veronica and I visited the San Antonio Museum of Art. While viewing the Egyptian sect ..read more
