We’re thrilled to share the news that we are soon to have a new member of our team here at the practice. Highly regarded optometrist Eleanor Leech will join the practice later this month. Zara became Cameron Optometry’s 50th myopia management patient in early 2019. Referred from another optometrist, she was ten years old and already had a prescription of -4 which means she was reliant on her spectacles all the time. When we first wrote in our blog about Myopia Management over two years ago, it was all quite new. Cameron Optometry was one of the first optometrists in the UK to set up a Myopia Management programme and then became the first in Scotland to prescribe the new MiSight daily contact lenses. Since then a lot more research has been done into the effectiveness of Myopia Management and we read regular reports about the ‘myopia epidemic’ facing us, as the number of short-sighted children continue to rise steadily. In the UK one in three people will end up myopic, the medical term for short-sighted, where objects in the distance appear blurred. Mild to moderate myopia can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, however high levels of myopia can be far more problematic. As the degree of myopia increases the lenses in your glasses get thicker, but more worryingly, the risk of developing additional eye conditions such as retinal detachments, glaucoma and cataracts, increases.
