Out of curiosity, was Final Fantasy III on NES/Famicom the first JRPG to use damage numbers?

In brief, 'damage numbers' are those little numbers that briefly appears whenever you deal damage or heal in battle. And before they came into the scene, JRPGs generally had to rely on clunky damage readout boxes (as was the case with Final Fantasies I and II, again on NES/Famicom). There might have been other games who figured it out earlier but FF3 is the only early JRPG that I know that utilized damage numbers which is in itself quite an impressive feat. Thought they certainly didn't become standard until SNES and PlayStation eras. And even then, main Pokemon games never utilized them to t ..read more

In a world full of games getting overly complex, you need to play 'The Cruel King and the Great Hero'

I bought this on sale on PSN for $14 and I'm writing this, I'm still currently playing through. Only about 4-5 hours in to it, but I gotta say something about it's simplicity is very relaxing and fun to play through. It's keeping my attention and is proving more interesting than even some of these bigger AAA jrpgs that have come out lately. Sometimes less is more. It's very simple in terms of combat and exploration. Combat consist of Attack, Defense, Skills, and items. There no overly expansive skill trees, or complex mechanics. Just pure, simple turn based combat. The most complex thing abou ..read more

So I keep seeing how Saga is like a reverse Final Fantasy. Focuses more on combat than story.

What makes saga combat stand out from other turn based JRPGs? In other words, how does the combat make it more fun and what does it typically do different? I’m interested in Saga Emerald, I just need to be sold on it. submitted by /u/NicholasMac69 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I’m so trash at turn-based games, that even FF7 og (which according to fans is one of the easiest in the series) I had to use the god mode to beat it, found it too hard. And now Like a Dragon: Inifinite Wealth (which again fans say is easy) I find so many fight’s difficult. How tf can you be trash at turn-based games? Any tips on understanding this genre I’d appreciate. submitted by /u/nonameavailableffs [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Read an article earlier and the author said there were 3 games that have dropped in the last month that have gambits like ff12. 2 of which were unicorn overlord and to a lesser degree, eiyuden chronicle. Not sure what the third entry he was talking about could be. anyone have any idea what title it is submitted by /u/axescent [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I just finished Final Fantasy VII: ReBirth, and I am blown away. I played the original game when it came out (I was a wee 9 year old who had a lazy but awesome babysitter), and my wife gifted ReBirth to me for my birthday because she knows how much I enjoyed the original game. I haven’t really played a lot of other JRPG’s. I play a lot of western ones though: Witcher 3, Skyrim, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, etc, etc. I have played Elden Ring, and idk if that counts as a JRPG or not. I very much wish to explore more JRPG’s, but looking at the list of ones to play on Series X and PS5, well, I don’t ..read more

Games you love but that you also kind of dread replaying?

This might sound a little weird, but are there any games that you love but that also hesitate to replay? Whether its because of the grind or some notoriously difficult bosses or another reason, something about it just deters you from revisiting a game you otherwise love. As an example, I love Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts 2 overall, but I'm also a bit of a completionist when it comes to games. So, even if I've 100% a game before, I will still feel a compulsion to get through everything again. And in both FFX and KH2, there are some notoriously painful side-content to get through.
