Looking for a system for "Napoleonic Fantasy" or "Napoleonic Horror"

There's a couple of examples of this kind of fiction that come to mind for me. First is obviously Naomi Novik's Temeraire, which is napoleonic dragons. Truthfully I haven't gotten around to reading it quite yet, but it's very high on my to-read list (if I can ever find book 1 in the bookstore!). Another one, perhaps less well-known, is Osprey's Silver Bayonet tactical wargame. I recognize that this is a fairly niche request. I can think of a handful of ways to try and hack something together - for example, I could take Hunter: The Reckoning and Victorian Age Vampire (both by White Wolf) and s ..read more

Favorite podcast to listen to that ARE NOT Actual-Plays?

I don't really know many podcasts related to tabletop and there are only a few I have listened to like Sly Flourish's, and Ludo Narrative Dissident though I have to say, Greg Stolze really does a lot to dominate the conversation a lot of the time and I found that annoying. Are there any podcasts you like that are more about people examining a system/adventure/etc or really anything as long as it's not an actual-play? submitted by /u/Nice_More_Dice [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How is Through the Valley of the Manticore? Or recommend a small hexcrawl to explore

Basically the title, I really want to check out a hexcrawl I can run to better undertstand what running a hexcrawl is like while using an OSR inspired system to run it. I do want to run something for around 3 months, hence prefer something smaller in scope rather than a giant ass world to explore. I don't know what it is but the supplement really seems to grab me but I would love to hear some real world opinions rather than just youtube reviews. Or really anything you recommend would be great submitted by /u/Nice_More_Dice [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Some ideas for an evil circus?

Hello everyone. I'm the GM, and I'm running an RPG for some friends. They're currently in a circus where all the spectators are hypnotized because the goal is that in the end, during the final show, the tent folds over them and devours them. My players need to find tickets in the various attractions around the tent and then give them to the spectators to "wake them up." They currently have about sixty tickets for around a hundred spectators, and the show is about to begin. However, I'm facing two problems and I need some ideas please : How can I justify that when a ticket is given to a specta ..read more

How does a GM stop their Campaign from getting off course?

I've always been interested in GMing, but I never really understood how GMs can create Campaigns with stories, but then keep their party on such course (especially in a sandbox RPG). It seems like an event can go in so many different ways, so how do you GMs remain on the story you planned? submitted by /u/RepresentativeFact57 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Trying to find a specific picture - a hex grid showing distance btwn city/town/village

For a while now, I've been reading a ton about realm building, hex crawling, and solo play, both books and articles. At some point, I came across a picture demonstrating the ideal distance between a city and its surrounding towns and villages. I thought it was neat, but stupidly didn't save it or make note of where it was, and would like to locate it again. It's a hex grid, with a city taking up several hexes in the middle, several towns around it of (IIRC) one hex each, and the villages are blue dots at the corners of the hexes. There are roads, but no environmental features. Everything is e ..read more

Looking for an alternative heroic fantasy RPG

I've been trying to find a new RPG after my current one wraps up; been playing dnd 5E since I started playing 6 years ago. I also picked up a few rules light games like Cairn and Hero Kids, but I've only ran the latter for my son. I've looked at a few other systems like Pathfinder, Forbidden Lands, and the upcoming Daggerheart. Pathfinder i hear is a good alternative to dnd, but I worry about the crunch for my players. Some of them still struggle with 5e characters. Forbidden Lands looks interesting (want to do an epic quest campaign next), but looks like a farcry from heroic fantasy combat l ..read more

RPGs without social system?

I've heard of games that are run with social interaction being governed solely by player roleplay and not mechanics or dice. If you've used such a game, how well did social interaction/roleplay go? Did you like it more than other games with mechanical social systems? What are the pitfalls? Pros and cons? Thanks. submitted by /u/AccomplishedAdagio13 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
