“I’ve been a family doctor for more than 20 years. Now, I have no choice but to close my practice”

Everyone knows it’s nearly impossible to find a family doctor in Canada, with 6.5 million people across the country going without a regular physician. Last year, Ontario allowed pharmacists to prescribe treatments for some minor ailments, like pink eye and cold sores, but it’s far from the level of care patients receive in a doctor’s office. And private clinics are popping up across the province to fill the gap—for those who can pay. To make matters worse, a growing number of family doctors are walking away from the public system, citing poor funding and overwhelming paperwork. One such physi ..read more

Editor’s Letter: How Ontario schools lure and abandon international students
Toronto Life

Conestoga College’s pamphlet for foreign students is a master class in seduction. The Viewbook, as it’s called, is lush with eye-popping numbers and images of cheerful transplants from China, India, Tanzania and beyond. The Waterloo region is presented as a wonderland of higher education, one that teems, as we learn on page two, with “bustling nightlife, affordable housing and public transit.” Were I a prospective student in, say, Delhi, Changsha or Manila, I’d be on the first plane out. What I would discover upon setting foot on campus, however, would be soul-crushing. Kitchener, like Toront ..read more

Read this article in English. 12 ..read more

The perilous lives of Canada’s international students
Toronto Life

Read this article in Mandarin. People who knew Ian Chan didn’t believe he’d get involved in a kidnapping. An international student who’d moved to Canada to study commerce, he spoke slowly and came across as naive and eager to please. But he could also be impulsive and greedy. Once, during a visit to the Pacific Mall in Markham, Chan broke into a closed retail kiosk and made off with an armful of sports memorabilia. A few hours later, overcome with guilt, he broke into the kiosk again, this time to return the stolen goods. Both breaches were caught on camera. The first one resulted in Chan’s ar ..read more

Inside the kitchen of Solomon Mason, executive chef at Auberge du Pommier
Toronto Life

When Solomon Mason was 18 and living in his hometown of North Bay, he started writing daily letters to Alinea, a Michelin-star restaurant in Chicago. In them, the now–executive chef at Auberge du Pommier begged for a shot at an internship. The last letter even included a mixtape Mason had curated, featuring songs like “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” After three months of this, his persistence paid off: he was invited to Chicago to face off against 18 other aspiring chefs for a single coveted internship—and in the end, he won. “I was fortunate to know what I wanted to do when I was so young,” says ..read more
