I know there are many, many gift guides for quilters this time of year, so instead of making you a giant list of all the things I love (because I love all the sewing things), I’m sharing my five favorite quilting tools with you, the things I use day in and day out, that are sure to make any quilter smile and not break your budget either, so here they are: My Five Favorite Quilting Tools: Continuous Mist Spray Bottle—I use this all the time when I’m pressing. It delivers just enough water to get my fabric nice and crisp. I fill mine with this DIY Best Press! Original 1/4″ Presser Foot—I ..read more

My Favorite Rotary Cutting Method

I always used to cut my fabric using the lines on my cutting mat. Which led to too many cutting mats being ruined quickly, and my fabric not always being accurate. Then I saw someone cutting fabric and using the ruler for measurement instead of the mat, once I made this switch my cutting mats lasted longer and my fabric was more accurate. But, I still run across people who cut fabric the other way, so it seemed only necessary to share this video. Here are the products I’m using in this video: Olfa Ergonomic Rotary Cutter Creative Grids 8 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ Ruler Creative Grids 4 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ R ..read more

How to Use Otter Wax for Waterproofing Fabric

Back in 2019 I sewed with Wax Canvas to make a duffel bag for my husband, it was a fun project and the duffel bag has held up great. I also made a travel bag…and have been disappointed with it ever since. Since the Wax Canvas cannot be ironed, I couldn’t add interfacing to the outer fabric. Interfacing just the lining is never my favorite because the bulkier seams are toward the outside of the bag. Add that Wax Canvas just comes in solid colors and I was left looking for something else. Recently I made the Hudson Diagonal Zip Pouch (a C&V Sewing Club Exclusive) with regular canvas a ..read more

A few weeks ago I went on a one-day Sew In with my local quilt shop, Little Foot Quilt Shoppe. It was a great time! I hadn’t gone sewing outside my home in a couple of years, so I had to really think over what I had packed in the past. I ended up only wishing I’d done a couple of things differently, so I wanted to share all of that with you. Here are my best tips for what to bring on a quilt retreat. Quilt Retreat Big Items to Remember: The things you cannot leave for a retreat with out are: Sewing Machine (obviously – but don’t forget your pedal and cord!) Learn to Sew English Paper Piecing Hexagons with Confidence

One of my very favorite things to make English Paper Piecing Hexagons. English Paper Piecing, also known as EPP, is a method of hand sewing to create shapes that would be difficult to sew by machine. For EPP you use precut templates in your desired size and then baste your papers to them, and then sew the hexagons (or other shapes) together. Getting Started with Hexagons I recorded this video for you to help you get started making the hexagons, whether you’d like to thread-baste or glue-baste your hexagons. I prefer to thread-baste anything with a 1″ or shorter side and then glue anything larg ..read more

Sewing with Lace Zippers adds a fun, unique touch to your projects, and it’s a lot easier than you might think. I had never sewn with lace zippers until last year, and now I love to use them because of the charm they add to my projects. I created a video to help you learn to use them. In the vide you’ll see me using lace zippers on vinyl, but the great thing is they can be used on fabric the exact same way! To use your lace zipper on fabric, simply finish the edge of your fabric with bias tape, just like we did the vinyl in the video, and you’ll be all set to sew the lace zipper on! Add a Lac ..read more

To follow up with my previous blog post on where I buy my fabric, I wanted to share a little bit about my favorite fabrics in general. Let me start off by saying that my fabric is a collection from the past 12 years, so many of my favorite fabrics are out of print, but I bought larger pieces and am still using them. Use the Good Stuff For a while, I mostly bought new fabrics to share on the blog and Instagram because I felt bad showing things that were out of print. But, I do really love my older fabrics so much that I wanted to use the good stuff. Of course, when I started using my favorites ..read more

I wrote a blog post last year to give a quick overview of my favorite bag items. In this blog post I’ll help you figure out what options you have, what to buy, and how to use them. Sew-in Magnets in PVC The magnets you see above are my very favorite bag closure. They’re easy to use, cost-effective, and have great results. I’ve been buying them for years from Tantalizing Stitches. Not in the United States, see my whe ..read more

Normally the content you find here is mostly about sewing, because I love to sew! But, today I wanted to dive into something a little different because this is a question I get asked often, and I thought giving it a place on my website would be a great resource to all of you. So, today I am going to share with you how to start a quilting or sewing blog! First Step To Starting a Blog The first step when starting a quilting blog (or any blog) is to choose a host platform.
