Words by Dave Parkes, Guideline Ambassador UK Images by Pablo Saracco ( IG @pablosaracco ) This was my first ever visit to the river and l fell in love with the whole place immediately. From the moment we drove across the cliff face overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and then down into the camp, l was spellbound. Compared to the Rio Grande the Iriygon is small and the low clear water conditions demanded stealth. The sea trout are tremendous looking creatures and big, a great combination! 20lb fish are common and the river record now stands at 27.5lbs, caught by our own Guideline Ambassador Neil Ba ..read more

The important terminal tackle

Words by Aitor Coteron, Guideline Ambassador. Images by Aitor Coteron & Alvaro G. Santillan Fly fishing is about dreaming; it doesn’t matter if that dream is made of glimpses of that distant destination or of evocations of sceneries closer to home, every fishing project is full of expectations. Such an important psychological —and at times, monetary— investment asks for giving our tackle the consideration it deserves. Leaders and tippets are a key part of our gear; better to pay as much attention to them as we devote to rods, reels and lines, as terminal tackle is as determinant a piece o ..read more

Ephemera Vulgata and Ephemera Danica is often referred to as Mayflies in the UK and are the highlight for many anglers in both rivers and still waters. They are found all around Europe in lakes and rivers with good water quality and with bottom materials that consist of sand and silt. In most places where these are found it’s the best opportunity of the season to catch a trophy trout on a dry fly. Here is some facts about these beautiful insects and how to catch fish during this hatch. WHEN & WHERE? Both these mayflies live in the bottom material/substrate and are burrowing nymphs that fe ..read more

The Guideline Ullarhaus is a series of articulated trout streamers tied on high quality hooks with a strong stainless steel wire connection between them. The front hook is a size #2, and the rear hook is a smaller size #8. This flies are a variant of Kelly Galloups ´Boogie Man´ streamer but with some cool tweaks in the materials. The head is tied with a wool mix from Icelandic ram and that is what ullarhaus means, simply a woolhead! We also added some funky silicone legs to spice it up and add more movement. The head is fitted with brass dumbell eyes to make it sink fast enough and 3D eyes to ..read more

Chalkstream spring tactics

Words by Gilly Bate, Guideline UK Ambassador. Images by Gilly Bate & Alvaro G. Santillan. The Hampshire chalk streams usually open their doors from around Mid April with most estates adhering to the historical dry fly only rule until after the first weed cut in mid June. Nymphs are usually then allowed on the majority of beats but not all, so please check your rules before fishing. With crystal clear water, no angler activity and eager trout looking to put on weight after the winter months, the trout make good use of any hatches and surface fishing can be at its best. At this time of year ..read more

Words & images by Andy McClelland, Guideline Ambassador UK Small Stillwaters can be hard at times due to lots of angling pressure. There’s a few things you can do during the colder months when things become a lot harder and the fish become a lot slower on the take, or do they? Sometimes, on the hardest days fishing, anglers will take to Bung Fishing when they think the fish have just slowed completely up and think the fish have just gone off the feed. Well, those types of days can be the best days for pulling flies extremely fast. I’ve personally had those days when every angler around me ..read more

Why the switch?

Words & images by Helge Dahlen, Guideline Ambassador Norway. The first time i tried a switch rod was 10 years ago. Back then i felt that this was a funny thing to fish and cast with as it was something different then what i was used to with my traditional rods. But when it came to the practical fishing i always ended up choosing either a singlehanded rod or a double handed rod. I never saw that a setup with a switch rod could have any strong advantages over one of those in any situation on the trips i went on. I always ended up with asking myself the question why should i use the switch ro ..read more

NT11 Trout – 40 days in New Zealand

As I sit in my home nestled in the mountains of the Swedish north, my mind cannot help but wander back to a truly epic adventure I had just two months ago. I was in New Zealand, chasing after large browns and rainbows in some of the world’s most pristine waters. This trip was especially significant and eagerly anticipated due to the global pandemic that had put a halt to all international travel. COVID had prevented me from revisiting this favorite destination of mine for far too long. I remember vividly the incredible mouse-year back in 2019-20, where I was lucky enough to experience the best ..read more
