WORDS: BETTY PHOTOS: XAVIER WALKER COVER PHOTO: MARTY MATHESON du·al·i·ty noun the quality or condition of being dual.       2. an instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or two aspects of something; a dualism. I have to admit that Bass Coast’s 2019 theme excited me from the moment the organizers announced it. The idea of ‘duality’ permeates who we are as individuals – and my sociology brain went a bit bananas with how to approach exploring both the collective and individual experience or representation of duality. I wanted to get into the nitty-gritty of ..read more

Words by Arron Leppard | Photo courtesy of Jamal Eid – Desert Hearts Festival When I started making new friends and delving into the electronic music scene in California, I kept noticing that a lot of people with a certain special vibe wore a necklace bearing the same logo. Pointing to the necklace, I asked what it was, and with a gleaming smile across their face, they answered: “It’s Desert Hearts!” I’d never heard of it before. They quickly explained to me that it’s a community that created an intimate festival on an Indian reservation somewhat near San Diego… 1 stage. 24 hour music. Nothing ..read more

I recently met the amazing Roco from Betty & Kora, who offered me a media pass to shoot my first ever Shambhala for them! Naturally, that wasn’t the only logistic that needed figuring out, but after being offered a truck to borrow by someone we’d met barely 20 seconds before (I’m not even kidding – THANK YOU ROB!), we coul ..read more
