The first event of the 2021-2022 UIAA Ice Climbing season saw the hosting of a European Continental Cup competition in Bern, Switzerland on Saturday 13 November. An impressive span of 47 athletes (30 male, 17 female) from 15 countries took part in the lead only event. It proved to be the most ‘international’ competition the UIAA has been able to organize since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. In both categories, Swiss athletes made local advantage count. The UIAA Medical Commission, with the support of members of the UIAA Anti-Doping Commission, has released a paper analysing acute and chronic overstrain injuries in World Cup ice climbers. Members of the UIAA Anti-Doping and Medical Commissions contributed to a recent paper published studying the anthropometric, strength, endurance and flexibility characteristics of elite male ice climbers and sport climbers. The study is published in the German Journal of Sports Medicine. The 2020-2021 UIAA Ice Climbing season concluded with a World Cup event in Kirov, Russia on 6-7 March. Nearly 40 athletes took on speed and lead competitions at an ice tower which has long hosted UIAA-sanctioned events and training camps. The current season has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic with most competitions restricted to national athletes or those from neighbouring countries.
