Response to a Christocentric preaching perspective
Protestant Reformed Blogs

Jesus clearly says that all scriptures speak and testify about him (John 5, Luke 24 etc.) and therefore the job of the preacher is to bring out how this text points us to Christ and unveils the truths and application in light of the gospel. Not every verse is a messianic verse and yet Jesus says they all testify about him, so therefore each sermon must draw us to Christ. It’s impossible to preach a Christian message without preaching Christ. There seems to be a jump from all Scripture testifies about Christ to a mandate that says the preacher must point this out in all of his sermons without ..read more

Protestant Reformed Blogs

It is of popular belief that Jesus died on a Friday, this is because people only take into account one Sabbath day and assume that when the gospels say there is a Sabbath the day after Christs death they assume it is the weekly Sabbath. But it is important to remember there were other Sabbath days to include which is similar to us having public holidays throughout the year. During the Passover week there are some special Sabbaths that can occur on any day of the week, there was one special Sabbath that always occurred on the 15th of Nisan which is the first day of the feast of unleavened bread ..read more

Most are familiar with the ESV, but few are familiar with the newer, Lexham English Bible. The Lexham English Bible (LEB) began as an interlinear translation before the full English translation was released in 2010. (The LEB works very well with LOGOS Bible Software as it has the Greek interlinear together with the English translation together, so if you have LOGOS Bible software, make use of this translation.) The translation is very accurate–especially when it comes to the New Testament. I find it wanting in the Old Testament in a few places, and usually defer to the ESV on the Old Testament ..read more

Author of Sin or Ultimate Cause? Is there a difference?
Protestant Reformed Blogs

An Author is often thought of one who writes the script that is the direct and sole cause of all things that occur within the book. If the author wanted to write about an evil act that we would call one of the worst crimes and sins e.g. a husband murdering his wife, then it is the author that caused the wife to die not the husband. For the author mechanically controls each action and result and the action itself has no relationship with the result. For the author could control what the result is e.g. when the man throws the knife towards his wife’s chest the moment the knife touched the skin t ..read more
