Here at SOAR we know that ADHD presents unique challenges like affecting focus, impulsivity, and social behavior. While medication and therapy are standard treatments, Recent “research suggests that exercise offers several benefits for children with ADHD, including: less aggressive behaviors, improvements in anxiety and depression, and fewer thought and social problems”. We agree wholeheartedly about the benefits of physical activity for those with ADHD, and this concept is one of the founding principles of SOAR. Exercise serves as an important tool for regulating attention and improvi ..read more

When I was six my grandfather would tell me, “Wow you were born to talk. We should get that on a shirt just for you!” At age 10 my dad bet me $20 I couldn’t stay quiet for 20 minutes ($1 a minute at 10 was a huge deal), I lost that bet within 30 seconds. Later in my adult life my staff bio once read, “A customer once told her she should start a podcast because of how many things she has to say.” Now most of these comments were made in a way that seemed to be friendly, a joke even. But they have stuck with me to this day and now looking back were the signs pointing towards ADHD that got over ..read more

Passion and destiny often intertwine in unexpected ways. For me, it was a journey that started with a degree in elementary education and led me to the fulfilling path of working with children in a profoundly unique environment. Let me take you through my journey of discovery, growth, and finding my true calling with SOAR. As a college graduate, I embarked on the traditional route of becoming a public school teacher. Yet, amidst the rigors of the classroom, I realized there was a burning passion within me that needed expression. I craved to connect with students on a deeper level, to unders ..read more

As we start celebrating Women’s History Month, we would like to share a bit of SOAR’s history and recognize the woman we call the mother of SOAR. As a co-founder of SOAR, Wandajean Jones established her legacy at SOAR in various ways. She was passionate about youth and families dealing with the challenges and opportunities of ADHD because she walked in their shoes daily.  She grew up as a child with ADHD, known as Focused Attention Deficit Disorder back in the old days, now called ADHD without Hyperactivity. Wandajean grew up in the heart of Texas and attended Catholic school, where s ..read more

Lets go ahead and let the cat out of the bag. I have ADHD. I’ve known about it since I was 9, but I’ve had it my whole life- by nature that’s what a neurodevelopmental disorder is. Can’t sit still. Doesn’t listen to instructions. Smart, but lazy. Careless. Emotional. The ever present misconceptions of kids with ADHD. They aren’t new, and they’re pretty well-known by now, but slowly and surely- one kid, one teacher, one parent at a time- we’re changing that narrative. And besides, that’s only part of my story. But it’s a part of me that I now hold as a secret weapon. I started my time at ..read more
