How exactly do I go about publishing random studies?

I have my bachelor's in sociology and then went on to get my MBA because it was more practical in obtaining jobs post grad (we all know how tough getting actual sociology related jobs are) However, I still want to do research and publish my studies. For example, our local city has terrible traffic issues in multiple municipalities because of school-pick and drop-off lines. If I could survey and figure out why these parents are wanting to use these services rather than the school buses in depth, I would love to - literally just for fun. But obviously me going through the school pickup line and ..read more

Hi all, please delete if this isn't allowed. I'm applying to Sociology PhD programs this coming September and have obviously done a lot of research but figured I would turn to Reddit for more. I'm looking to work with professors who have research focuses on gender representation in media. I take on a critical realist and mixed methods approach typically. Do any programs or scholars come to mind? submitted by /u/StencilBoy [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is being a case worker good experince if I want to get into social science research?

I want to do social science research. I love writing papers abd looking up statistics and all that. T be quite honest I'm not meant for case management or social work dealing directly with people. I'd rather look at trends and write academic papers available for people to understand about issues going on in society. However I am passionate about helping people as it relates to human services but more indirectly. I do want to be able to work with people nut not everyday. I'm thinking more of working with people in short term projects on a micro/mezzo level to genuinely understand their needs a ..read more

How do people come to the conclusion we're living in "late-stage capitalism"?

This seems to be a pretty common sentiment these days amongst the discontent, but how do people figure that we're not actually just in the beginning stage of super pooper pounding capitalism? I mean, this sounds like people waiting for the world to end. "Its this year", "its the new millennium" "its 2012", but the world never ends. submitted by /u/TecNoir98 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

PhD (DPhil) programs in the UK/Ireland as an American

I am an American student currently enrolled in a terminal MA program in sociology. For my Phd, I am interested in studying in the UK or Ireland. Of course, I’m not made of money so this would depend on funding. I’ve been doing my own research on supervisors that would be a good fit for my research interests (economic sociology) but I’d like to hear from anyone who’s gotten their PhD in sociology abroad and any other information that might be useful to know at this exploratory stage. Thank you in advance. submitted by /u/bigbirdlooking [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hey everyone, I recently finished my undergraduate honours thesis and was wondering what journals people have used to publish such work. I’ve looked around but am personally having trouble finding some that specifically caters or that would accept undergraduate work. My thesis is a theoretical piece drawing on Althusser and Durkheim in analysis to understanding why atrocity (I.e terrorism and genocide). Any help is appreciated! submitted by /u/Girondinsb0rdeaux [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Should a College Grad Feel Bad for Wanting to Work at Starbucks?

I am curious about what it is like to work at Starbucks or a bubble tea shop. I didn’t grow up rich—just in a middle-class family in China. After graduating last year, I lucked out with a marketing job that pays well and lets me stand on my own two feet financially. I’ve always been into exploring different lifestyles. My boyfriend views this as privileged, suggesting it might deprive others from lower economic classes, who rely on such jobs of opportunities. Is it fair to pursue such work out of curiosity not for money? What's your take? Do people have the freedom to choose their jobs? Also ..read more

Does anyone know of any interesting research / works involving parasocial interactions?

Whether it involves prevalence on (social) media, changes in trends over history, or simply patterns in behavior? Apologies if that’s broad, but I am interested in different perspectives. submitted by /u/Placename07 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
