ADHD Goblin Women
A dose of healthy distraction

ADHD Goblin Women are a THING. Not only are we not meeting expectations publicly, now there’s a catchy nickname for how we present at home. I picture myself as a goblin with unwashed hair tied back in a rubber band, visible coffee stains on my shirt, while eating cheezits in bed. I conjured this image of myself as a monstrous hag before I actually found the image below, created by Esmerelduh in early 2022.    https://www.instagram.com/p/CbFkEZGOoRE/   Most days I shuffle around my house in pajama pants. Sometimes I wear workout pants and tanks and cover them with a sweatshirt ..read more

Do you need an ADHD diagnosis?
A dose of healthy distraction

I’ve been getting variations of this, “do you need an ADHD diagnosis?” question so it’s time to stop avoiding and actually write down my thoughts. ADHD is just one part of what makes you, you. It is not an identity. So I usually avoid answering this question because my opinion isn’t relevant to your life. Most things worth doing aren’t easy, and getting an ADHD assessment is no exception. Do you need an ADHD diagnosis?   ADHD assessment Let’s acknowledge up front that you must jump through multiple hoops to get an ADHD assessment. Finding a clinician takes patience and persistence. What am I doing with my life?
A dose of healthy distraction

What am I doing with my life? I start to stress sweat as I write this but I need to talk about it. Time is passing quickly and it feels more n more like my life isn’t within my control and maybe I’m really not going to meet my full potential. This all started on the beach earlier today. My kid was sitting next to me reading and he got up to stretch and he had hair in his armpits?! Not adult male body hair, but a patch of hair. Imagine my horror!? If I’d taken more photos, or at least paid for the school photos instead of forgetting, I would have noticed that my son is growing up. Last yea ..read more

Not Everyone Needs an ADHD Coach
A dose of healthy distraction

Not everyone needs an ADHD coach. Seriously, everybody and their brother is hanging an internet shingle and calling themselves an ADHD coach. I’m happy that ADHD is having it’s moment, but saddened by the predatory behavior of my fellow humans.   There is no reporting system for poorly performing or unethical coaches. It’s not like a therapist where you can report them to the state where they are licensed.   A few years back I was feeling pretty down about my writing aspirations. So I hired a local business owner for business coaching. She’d built an impressive brick and mortar bu ..read more

Women Diagnosed with ADHD Later in Life
A dose of healthy distraction
by admin

I know that’s a long title, but women diagnosed with ADHD later in life are weary. Whether you self-diagnosed or jumped through all the hoops of the healthcare system, you are crawling across the finish line after running a marathon you never wanted to run, most likely after a series of unpleasant or life altering experiences. “Later in life” includes diagnosis after having children, living through a pandemic, and anyone who hit rock bottom through chance or circumstance. Talking about your new diagnosis brings a range of responses, from curious to totally dismissive. Being told to “try har ..read more

A Week of ADHD Shenanigans
A dose of healthy distraction

I’ve had many requests for another day-in-the-life article, but I decided instead to give you a week of ADHD shenanigans instead. My son was little when I wrote that. These days everyone shares every moment of their ADHD lives on social media. But I feel more comfortable writing it down than pointing at word bubbles. This particular week was ADHD personified. With school ending, me attending a class, and mercury in retrograde the month of May was innnnersting. Buckle up! Thursday During step-up night my friend Heather and I were talking about how we had been at school events every single nig ..read more

ADHD and Flexible Thinking
A dose of healthy distraction

ADHD and flexible thinking don’t always go together. It’s a complicated equation. ADHD + negative self-talk + wonky EFs = not-so-flexible thinking. But if you think about it, Flexible thinking isn’t easy for anyone. Take for example Kim Kardashian’s recent comments about “nobody wanting to work anymore.” Kardashian’s stunningly tone deaf comments are infuriating for sure. But when we get mad at her garbage  advice we’re missing an important point. Kardashian does not have the ability to pause, consider different perspectives, and adapt her thinking. Flexible thinking is a skill, and ..read more

Understanding ADHD And Hyperfocus
A dose of healthy distraction

Everyone talks about lack of focus, but there’s little understanding of ADHD hyperfocus. What is hyperfocus?  It is exactly what it sounds like. When a person focuses on something so intently that they fail to notice changes in their environment, other people, and sometimes even neglect to eat or drink. Years ago I was working on an article, probably for this site. My husband was out of town and my son was at childcare less than a mile from my home. At one point my phone rang and when I picked up this is what I heard: “Mrs Lewis it’s nearly 6pm and normally you pick up E by 4pm. Is every ..read more

ADHD and Exhaustion
A dose of healthy distraction

Every woman I talk to mentions ADHD and exhaustion at some point. For that reason I’ve suspected for a while that the fuzzy cotton brain feeling many of us describe isn’t our imagination or another manifestation of poor executive function. So I was thrilled when this article came out confirming what you and I already know; we with ADHD are f*cking exhausted. Excuse my language but explaining it feels even more depleting. I’m so tired: The connection between ADHD and Exhaustion   There is a ton of bad advice out there are both ADHD and exhaustion. When you try to explain you’ll hear the s ..read more

The Invisible Life of ADHD Women
A dose of healthy distraction

ADHD women are invisible in the world. Not because you can’t see us, but because you can’t SEE us clearly. Many of us live in the margins because we have never found our footing. Watching everyone else seemingly get everything they want and feeling like nobody notices YOU can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. You don’t feel comfortable being seen, but your attempts to assert yourself are met with eyerolls and deep sighs. It’s not just masking and covering up your symptoms. It’s the fact that so much of the work women and mothers do can’t be measured and is not supported by society. And when ..read more
