As you know, challenging the status quo isn’t always easy. The Civil Rights movement, the Women’s Suffrage movement, and so many other iconic examples of advocacy and activism show that there can also be intense backlash. While 99% of the time you will never have to experience safety issues due to exercising your First Amendment rights, we must warn you to take any necessary precautions to minimize the chances. Nowadays, most safety concerns come from spreading your message on social media. Although all movements experience online trolling, the main threat comes from doxing. Doxing is the act ..read more

Years ago when I first marveled at the idea of advocacy, I didn’t know how much I still had to learn about the world. About how speaking out about things was less of a choice and more of an obligation than I ever considered. About how those in power would do anything to make the voices of so many just like me sound weak and ineffectual. About how criticizing my elected officials and those with the most social capital meant that I was taking on a much bigger entity of power than simply the issue at hand. To be a person with a conscious means to hold strong convictions, beliefs, and ideas, whate ..read more

We Are Here & We Will Be Seen: 5 Tips for Youth On The Front Lines of Advocacy, Change & Justice

In America we are young, tired and traumatized. We are tired of validating our space, our existence and the reason why we should have a seat at the table. Youth are continuously ignored, being dismissed, and unheard. Stereotyping youth as “too young” or “not experienced enough” has been a consistent strategy to devalue the movements that we create.  Youth are dying. Bullets piercing our skin, the hands of our “protectors” bruise us, while the weight of our own communities burden us with expectations that we, as a future generation, are expected to embrace.  Not only do we confront ou ..read more

As an intergenerational and multiracial organization dedicated to elevating the civic leadership of teens from marginalized backgrounds, the Youth Activism Project has a message specifically for Black youth in this current political climate: You matter. Your life matters. Your interests, your passions, your hopes, your dreams — they all matter. The Youth Activism Project exists, in part, so that you can amass the skills and resources to demand that decision-makers, too, care about your lives and your aspirations. We stand in solidarity with all the youth-serving organizations that believe buil ..read more

Between running a national refugee awareness campaign, organizing clothing donation drives for newly-resettled immigrants, and juggling high school, 19-year-old Matthew Tikhonovsky’s schedule is jam-packed. “I guess you could say I’m very, very busy,” Matthew said. “You don’t even want to see my weekly calendar.”  Matthew started working on issues relating to immigration when he was a freshman in high school in Atlanta, GA. He’s since spoken at high schools and colleges nationwide about refugee resettlement, and he co-launched a research study on the Trump Administration’s immigration pol ..read more

Women in STEM (WiSTEM) was founded in March 2017 to combat the systemic gender disparity within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and has become a powerhouse since then. As an entirely student-run organization, WiSTEM simultaneously empowers girls to pursue STEM and teaches them the leadership skills necessary to succeed.
