SUMMARY: Basing policy decisions on fake news can have far-reaching and damaging consequences. It has been widely claimed by government and throughout the media that 97% of overseas students depart after graduating. This is completely misleading. Four in ten overseas students (130,000 people in 2018/19) either extend their permission to remain in the country or are not identified as leaving on time, according to analysis by the Office for National Statistics. WHAT IS THE 97% CLAIM? Lord Bilimoria (among others) has stated that statistics show that 97% of students go home after their ..read more

The government have said that the asylum deal with Rwanda will lead to a ‘small number of the most vulnerable refugees in Rwanda will be resettled in the UK‘ but have not yet provided any more detail about how many people this will involve. A little-noted clause in the Rwanda agreement commits the UK to resettling an unspecified number of refugees from that country to the UK. Clause 16 of the deal (see link) says: “Resettlement of vulnerable Refugees: 16.1. The Participants will make arrangements for the United Kingdom to resettle a portion of Rwanda’s m ..read more

Government punishes British graduates with more immigration even after Border Control Betrayal

Days after statistics showed that the government handed out a million visa entry grants to overseas nationals to come to the UK in the past year, the government has put in place a new visa which would increase immigration further. This new route (the so-called ‘High Potential Individual’ visa) would allow graduates of universities around the world to come to the UK to work in jobs at any skill or pay level for two to three years. Crucially, despite empty promises of firmer immigration control and reduced inflows, this is being enacted with minimal checks and balances, including…. NO annual ca ..read more

We need transparency on immigration

73% of the public now say the government is handling the issue of immigration badly (YouGov May 2022). The public know both that immigration is skyrocketing (breaching a clear promise by the government to reduce and control it) and that they are not being given a clear picture of what is happening on the issue. The problem has been worsened by recent botched decisions on immigration statistics. Previously the level of net migration was published with a delay of just six months. However. we now have a delay of about a year. The ONS say that immigration statistics for the year to June 2021 will ..read more

A total of 1.6 million visas and permits were granted, of which just over 600 ..read more

Tough borders need backbone

Does the government have the backbone to deliver on the Rwanda deal? Our latest analysis of the government’s Rwanda asylum deal (see summary) concludes that the policy has the potential to send a powerful message to the vile traffickers. Flying illegal immigrants coming from a safe country to Rwanda will discourage would-be migrants from taking the small boat route and shrink the profits going to criminals and ultimately save lives, as well as bring down the exploding cost of the asylum system. The UK has to show (as the Australians comprehensively did) that illegal arrival ..read more

Boris Johnson’s election promise to reduce immigration was a sham The penny is finally dropping. As we have been saying since the (Australian) points-based system (PBS) was first mooted ahead of the Brexit vote and later sold to the public in the 2019 election campaign – a loose PBS, Australian in name only, would lead to more immigration not less. The government’s version of the PBS has significantly weakened control. As even those who view immigration from a different perspective to us have acknowledged, lower qualifications and pay requirements, unlimited numbers and abandoning th ..read more
