Becoming an Assistive Technology provider is a great way to amp up your resume, round out your skill set, and make yourself more marketable.
In many states, an OT does not need any special certification, classes, or certificates to be considered an Assistive Technology provider. If you are considering changing roles but are hesitant to spend the time and money for a “certificate,” review your state education department policies.
The Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) certification is the gold standard for ATP certification. You can learn more ..read more

OTPs know a secret that we want to broadcast to all parents, teachers, and adults with kids in their lives: Playing makes learning fun! Kids learn while playing!
As we start the summer break, let’s talk about kids learning, retaining, and increasing skills that will keep minds sharp and skills strong!
And because I’m always budget-minded, (not only in my classroom but for kids from less fortunate families). What’s cheaper than a box of colored chalk (regular-size chalk is my recommendation) or a bucket of sidewalk chalk?

Tips For Your Sensory Kid to Help Them GET TO Sleep And STAY Asleep
I don’t have to convince anyone how important sleep is! Children may have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep—especially those with sensory processing issues. When sleep is difficult for the child, it ends up impacting the WHOLE family. I’m sure tired parents can relate that if your child isn’t sleeping, they will wake you up, and you won’t sleep either. I am a passionate advocate for school Occupational and Physical Therapists.
I like to keep my blog light and fun, but sometimes you’ve got to get serious.
I’m serious about OT.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg has always been a role model and an inspiration for me.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an advocate who fought for women’s rights. She experienced blatant gender discrimination during the 1960s, making it nearly impossible to find a job. Even though she exceled as a professor, discrimination against women was rampant. She fought against discrimination for both genders.
Her advocacy journey was slow ..read more

I believe from the bottom of my heart that school Occupational & Physical Therapists should NOT be Civil Service Employees. BUT, there are a LOT of very good things about taking a civil service position.
There are different ways to work as an OTP or PT in a school district. Work as a contract employee, directly for the district, or somewhere in between. Learn more about how to get directly hired here .
In the USA, many school OTs (including myself) are hired under the Civil Service System. Being hired from the Civil Service list DOES NOT mean that you’re automatically in th ..read more

Potty training can be a challenge for parents, but it’s also an important part of childhood development. The normal struggle can be even more difficult when there are sensory processing issues. Recognizing that they need to go, wearing big girl or big boy underwear, and being able to use different toilets can all be impacted by sensory processing.
Sensory Processing is a Natural Part of the Toileting Process
A bathroom environment can be overstimulating to start with. We receive sensory information from our eyes, ears, skin, muscles, and joints. Our brain’s job is to organize the informati ..read more
