Dream of meeting and feeding a rare red panda?  The Chattanooga Zoo is one of only a dozen zoos in the country to offer encounters with a red panda.  Emily crossed an animal encounter off her bucket list, by receiving for her sixteenth birthday a rare up-close visit with an endangered red panda.   That same day, she also had behind the scenes experience with a capybara and the spider monkeys. Endangered Red Pandas Emily has been fond of red pandas, ever since seening one at the San Francisco Zoo. Red Pandas are an often misunderstood animal, who belong more to the raccoon family tha ..read more

As regular readers of this blog know, Emily is a complete animal enthusiast. So you can imagine her excitement to discover a petting farm at a gas station in Georgia. We found the spot on one of our many trips along the four-hour drive from Atlanta to Savannah. The scenery along this stretch of road is rural, and there aren’t many rest areas. Off of highway 16, Emily spotted some bison in a field behind a gas station. On another trip along this route, she noticed an emu in the same area. Our curiosity was piqued, so we decided to stop and check it out. To Emily’s delight, we found out that th ..read more

Our family recently decided to visit one of the several dozen alpaca farms scattered throughout North Georgia. These are small, private working farms. For a reasonable fee, we were able to set up a private tour of one of the farms. We chose a warm weekend in the springtime for our visit. Our educational tour taught us many interesting facts about these delightful animals. Finding Out About Alpaca Fiber When we began our tour, the guide described alpaca fiber and took time to share some of the ways this material is used. Alpacas are raised for their soft, warm fleece, which is even softer than ..read more

Six Flags is a big roller coaster park in Georgia, but did you know not far from Atlanta there is a theme park that is part amusement park, part water park and part zoo? On family trips to Orlando, we noticed many signs advertising Wild Adventures Theme Park. The park features 59 attractions and over 500 wild animals. We decided to check out this unique zoo, amusement park, and waterpark located in South Georgia. It was just a little over a three-hour drive from our home in the Atlanta area. The rides ranged from kiddie rides to carnival-style rides like teacups and the tilt-a-whirl, to thril ..read more

Our family recently decided to go on a short weekend excursion to St. Simons Island, Georgia. This quaint, historical location is just a four and a half hour drive from our home in Atlanta. The island’s charming, natural setting is highlighted by the many large moss-draped live oak trees dotting the landscape. It boasts a slow-paced atmosphere, with many of the locals and vacationers choosing to travel throughout the island by bicycle instead of with motor vehicles. We found it to be an ideal place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city while finding out more about the ar ..read more

Stingray City is a must-see stop for any marine wildlife enthusiasts who are visiting Grand Cayman. This excursion was the absolute highlight of Emily’s stay on the island. She was amazed by the grace and beauty of these gentle sea creatures. There are a variety of tour operators to choose from on the islands. Most tours include a snorkeling stop or two and tours normally last between two and three hours. Since Emily and her sister prefer smaller, less crowded tour groups, we looked for a tour that accommodated a relatively small number of people. Another plus for the tour we chose was shaded ..read more

One rainy day during our family trip to The Cayman Islands we decided to visit Cayman Crystal Caves, the island’s newest nature attraction. This tour lasts approximately one and a half hours. It was about a 45-minute drive from Georgetown/Seven Mile beach. Since we were running a few minutes late and missed the bus from the main entrance to the caves, we drove our rental car down the gravel bumpy road to catch our tour group. The road was surrounded by lush vegetation. After parking, we met up with our tour guide Chester and 16 other tourists to begin our tour. Chester was a local Cayman resi ..read more
