Spoonwood Ridge Hole Five Has a New White Tee

Spoonwood Ridge Five Red and White layout have shared a teebox since the hole was put in to the layout over the past winter. It played as a slightly uphill left to right technical woodsy par four a bit over 400'. Big arms who could hit that RHBH anhyzer drive were shredding it often. No more. The Red layout will now have exclusive use of that old tee, and the White layout has now been expanded to a bit over 500'. To make that birdie from the new tee, you'll probably need to power a left-to-right drive at least 350' to the landing area past the left side wood pile to leave a makeable upshot fo ..read more

Signature Hole?

A favorite question for disc golfers is "what's your favorite hole?". The answer is usually more complicated that it seems. A good example is the 15th hole on Calico Creek. For me, it's a spectacular hole from the Green Layout. It checks all the boxes for great design: It's visually attractive, provides me with a challenge, and has a level of risk/reward. I take my trusty TeeBird, forehand it with near full power, and aim just inside the left "Mando". If I hit my line, the disc will fly through the gap in the protective trees and glide up within the circle for a birdie opportunity. If I don't ..read more

Calico Creek - Hole 12 Signature Hole?

Hole 12 is a classic New England woods hole. Not only is this whole visually striking, in a tight match a two shot swing is possible. Towering ancient pines, oak, birch, and beech define the fairway. A well thrown tee shot will result in a birdie look. A errant toss and a bad kick will leave you struggling to avoid bogey. From the back tee it's 246' slightly downhill technical shot from a finely crafted turf tee box, with plenty for room for a run-up and follow through. You have a choice of many lines, though each face a unique risk-reward analysis. The left-to-right line will be favored by ri ..read more

Calico Creek - Hole 11

After pretty much climbing the ridge along the creek for the past 6 holes, hole eleven becomes the first significant downhill shot of the round. It's 217' from the back tees, and 171' from the green. The most generous line is a big right-to-left, a basic hyzer for a right-handed backhand from both tees. There is also a more direct line, especially from the green tee. There is some low scruff on this "straight line", plus some high branches that can swat a careless tee shot. Bad kicks can knock your disc into some dense cover where you may be struggling to save par. The basket is protected by ..read more

Hole ten is a fairly short hole with the best line playing slightly from left to right. Anything on the right side of the fairway risks getting swatted down by an early tree. A few trees to the left of the basket can make for some challenging "edge of the circle" putts. The biggest challenge here is to realize the elevation gain's effect on your tee shot. Just 164' from the green tee, and 233' from the back red tee, this hole plays much longer ..read more

Calico Creek - Hole 9

You’ll have a bit of a hike from the eighth hole basket to hole nine. Once you get the to the tees, you will realize this hole has completely different personalities depending on which layout you are playing. From the short “green” layout, it’s a straight ace run, just 152’ with generous lines to the basket. It plays slightly uphill, and there are still a few tree stumps in the fairway that will cut off any skips, but it’s still a good ace/birdie run for a solid rec play. From the “red” teepad, the hole becomes an uphill 268’ throw, probably the third or fourth most difficult hole on Calico ..read more

Calico Creek - Hole 8

Just a short walk after putting out on 7 you'll find the nice stone-framed tee box for the 8th hole. It's a 207 foot toss, with a single tee for both the green and red layout. The fairway initially slopes down to the creek, then finishes rises to finish slightly uphill to a basket well protected by some trees. The throw must cross Calico Creek, which, depending on the time of year, may be six or seven inches for flowing water or be just a dry bed. In either case, it plays "casual", if you happen to land a disc in the creek it's a free lift with 1 meter relief. Notice the fine stonework of Chr ..read more

Calico Creek, a New Hole!
New England Disc Golf Center Blog

Drew, Chris, and the staff of the New England Disc Golf Center stayed busy during the state mandated COVID-19 closure. An addition hole has been completed on the Calico Creek front nine, between the third hole and the old fourth hole. For now, we'll just call the hole "3A". Once we're to a full 18, this will be hole 4. It’s fascinating to me to watch the design and construction of a new disc golf hole. Drew and Chris were originally planning on putting the last six holes of the Calico Creek layout to the south end of the property and had began clearing for the holes last year. However, some of ..read more
