– Supertubos may be the most famous Portuguese wave, but here in Sagres you can surf practically every day, all year round –  says Rui, a local surfing instructor. It’s the beginning of November. Portugal welcomes us with sunshine, warm air and a well-organized, though not free of charge, highway system. Entering the Algarve, we left Spain behind us, which let us down in terms of surfing but we still love this country, now even stronger because of Seville. Along the way the sun bathed Atlantic Ocean appears announcing that it won’t fail us. After less than two hours of driving we see the ..read more

During my last surf trip to Spain I was testing the latest version of SurfEars. Here are my thoughts about these earplugs. I like to be well prepared no matter what I do. So I read a lot not only about surfing but also about surfing equipment and the sports related events. One day I found information about a conference for surfing startups held in Lisbon. Scrolling through the event page I found couple of interesting speakers that were supposed to give a lecture during that meeting. One of them represented SurfEars. I read about the product and it grabbed my attention. It w ..read more

Small town 50 km Down South from Cadiz isn’t a first choice for someone who’s looking for a surf spot in Europe. But after spending 5 days there all I can say is that I’m definitely coming back. I won’t lie. I love Spain. That is way when planning this year’s first surf trip I wanted to combine surfing with another occasion to explore this amazing country. Together with Mrs_Edita we decided that we’re gonna hit the Atlantic coast of Andalusia first and then explore mysterious and tourists free Galicia. For our first destination we chose Conil de la Frontera. A place that in my opinion is ..read more

Winter surfing in Europe

Living in Europe, you can surf all year round. Here’s my subjective list of European spots depending on the season. Part 1: Winter. Central Europe isn’t a dream place to live for surfers. But considering the ease of moving around the continent and the distance to the reservoirs allowing surfing I think it’s not that bad. For example from Poland you can get by plane to the European Atlantic coast or the Canary Islands within few hours. The Baltic Sea has become more and more popular among surf lovers as well. I wrote about the potential of Polish coast here. As long as I admire cold water surfe ..read more

Here’s the first part of 10 exercises training plan that can help you prepare your key muscles for intense surfing (during your next surf trip). For starters, the absolute basis: exercise for proper posture and balance. While setting up the workout programme before my surf trips I look for various exercises and aI test a lot. I’m not a professional trainer, but knowing my body and basic principles of good and healthy workouts, I often work on my own exercises. This series of exercises helped me to get in the right shape before my last trip to Galicia. It’s core has been developed by Kevyn Dean ..read more

Raw and challenging. Beautiful and unique. I’ve experienced those two faces of Galicia. Here’s the story of non-Spanish speaking kook trying to survive in one of Europe’s best surfing destinations. I will divide my Galician story in two parts. It’s related to the way we travelled there. In the first one I’ll present my experiences with the South West part of the region, the coastal neighborhood of the cities of Vigo and Pontevedra. In the second one I will focus on A Coruna area, which lies on the North West part of this Spanish surfing paradise. Home sweet home Leavin ..read more

If you’ve been an old pool for some time you can miss the water but never the vibe. If you’ve been taking pictures for some time you know that the old pool is better then the new one. If you’ve grabbed a surfboard in your thirties for the first time, you know what style fits it best. It’s good to be old. Thanks for watching. Now go surf! 5 rules of a perfect surfing lesson

Since my first surf trip in 2015 I’ve had a bunch of surfing lessons. Based on that I prepared a list of 5 rules that in my opinion make up a perfect surfing lesson. Thanks to them you’ll know what to expect from your instructor and what to do when you’ll decide to hit the water on your own. Rule no 1: Take private lessons At the beginning of the surfing adventure group lessons are a reasonable option. When you learn to stand up on a board and you slide in the white water, a lesson with couple of other people who like yourself drink too much sea water and take constant wipeouts ..read more

(Inland) surfing workout: lake paddling
Son of a Beach | Surfing Blog

Nothing will replace the real waves, but it is still possible to practice some aspects of surfing away from the ocean, such as paddling. I, for example, do that on my favorite lake near Cracow. Check it out! Although the lake is not the ocean, even in such “stable” conditions you can practice such elements of surfing training as: correct paddling technique, endurance and shoulders strength, body positioning, balance while lying and sitting on a board, the starting sequence of movements to catch a wave, duck dive. I’ve been regularly training for couple of weeks now, which results i ..read more

How to progress after a longer break
Son of a Beach | Surfing Blog

Here are 4 exercises that will increase your confidence and control in the water after a break, coming to you straight from Sagres – Portugal’s best surfing spot (at least according to locals). I couldn’t wait for my autumn surf trip. The plan was to do 6 days of intensive surfing, first in south-west Spain, then in Portugal. I was hoping that Conil would again deliver beautiful, consistent waves perfectly suited to my level. Not this time. Conil turned out to be capricious (no swell throughout our stay) so 4 days of surfing there were lost. The only hope was the Algarve, supposedly reliable a ..read more
