The Buzzard – Buteo buteo
By Graham Stewart
The Buzzard is now the most common and widespread of all the birds of prey in the UK despite the high mortality rate of its young
Diet:
Being a slow flier the Buzzard does most of its hunting from a perch in a tree where it sits motionless, sometimes for hours waiting for something to pass below. Its main diet consists of small mammals, birds, carrion, earthworms and large insects.
Nest:
Generally in a tree, rocky crag or cliff side. Both birds play their part in building the nest which is made from twigs and branches. Nest size varys from ap ..read more

RS-80N3 REMOTE SWITCH
Here’s another personal favourite and kit bag staple , the Canon RS-80N3 cabled remote switch. It comes with an 80cm fixed cable. The N3 connector is compatible with a number Canon bodies including my personal choice the mirrorless Canon R5 , The link at the bottom of this review has a list of all the cameras this remote fits.
The remote switch allows shake free still and video shooting and replicates the shutter button on your camera allowing halfway or complete pressing of the shutter and also has a shutter release lock. It’s a simple shutter release device wit ..read more

EOS R5 CAMERA
Confession time, I’m a massive fan of this camera , it’s the mainstay of my kit bag and I regularly have two of these bodies in my camera bag. Lightweight and really solidly constructed it offers the perfect balance of performance and reliability. Boasting an impressive 45.0 megapixels, 20 frames per second , 8 stops of image stabilisation and capable of capturing full frame 8k raw video what’s not to like ?
Grey Squirrel
The EOS R5 uses Canons advanced full frame 45MP CMOS sensor which enables the capture of stunning and detailed still photographs. Coupled with the all ..read more

Wood Mouse , Apodemus sylvaticus
The Wood Mouse is one of Britain’s most abundant mammals. It’s mainly nocturnal with most activity peaking at dusk and dawn. Despite its name its spread isn’t confined to just woodlands , including homes , gardens , grass verges , and moorland. It’s a typical mouse shape with a long tail and large ears. Its coat is dark brown with a lighter off white underside.
The Wood Mouse is slightly larger than it’s more troublesome relative the House Mouse. It’s present in most parts of the U.K. with an estimated population of around 40 million individuals which gr ..read more

The Common Redshank – Tringa tetanus
Redshank
The Common Redshank is a large sandpiper with long, bright red legs or “ shanks “ It is a typical wader, feeding in shallow water around lakes, marshes, mudflats , coastal wetlands and estuaries. It breeds on open marshes and estuary grasslands. Redshanks are wary and noisy birds. Their calls will alert everything else in the vicinity to danger and they can often be heard long before you see them.

Brownish all over, with a paler belly, the redshank is one of only two waders that has bright red legs; the spotted redshank also has red l ..read more

RF 800mm f11 IS STM LENS
The Canon Rf 800mm f11 IS STM is a super telephoto prime lens , big brother to the 600mm f11 and another staple part of my kit bag. So I may be a little biased , this compact lens that I pair with a Canon R5 body gives me stunning optical performance , quick and quiet autofocus thanks to the STM motor and with 4-stop image stabilisation the ability to shoot hand held. The lens is competitively priced and aimed at enthusiasts who are looking for an affordable step into long focal length prime lenses. So what’s not to like ?

The Hide , Monday 8th April 2023
Chaffinch
Another day here at the Meadow Hide and for once it’s dry and rather pleasant conditions for a days wildlife photography. And I have some good news, we are expecting chicks ! A family of Blue tits has moved into one the nest box’s Graham put up at the end of last year. Both parents have been busy flying back and forth from the box so I’m assuming there might already be chicks ?

The Hide , Monday 1st April 2024
European Robin
April , at last spring is here . At home the Hedgehogs are awake and hungry. And today I have a visitor at the Hide , the one and only Mr bird man of Marlborough…….. Graham Stewart no less. Another wet , wet , wet day here in North Wiltshire with at times some rather heavy downpours that once again have effected the wildlife watching .
Dunnock
One of our local residents doesn’t seem to mind the rather wet and damp conditions , the badly behaving gang of Grey Squirrels, causing mayhem around the pond . And it’s not just here either , read this art ..read more
