Pansexuality and Bisexuality – Are They Really That Different?
Queer Voices - Bi & Pansexual

It is safe to say that the LGBTQIA+ community has grown rapidly in recent years. Thanks to the rise of the internet, many members of the community can contact each other, no matter where they are from, and more people are aware of their existence. However, the number of uneducated LGBTQ+ members is still high – and that has brought many problems. One of them is the belief that specific sexual orientations are not valid. For instance, certain members of the community might say that pansexuality is not real and that bisexuality is a term that discriminates against people whose gender identity is ..read more

The moment bi twitter needed
Queer Voices - Bi & Pansexual

“No results for #bisexual” was what greeted bisexuals across the weekend as Twitter took the action of filtering out bisexual related searches on its platform, removing the ability for bisexuals to have this visibility. Photos, videos, and news sections were on continuous loading or showed no search results leaving information inaccessible. Social media has created a place for bisexuals to connect, engage and share information from all points across the world. Together the bisexual community is able to provide safe online spaces for each individual either in the closet or out. Online, bisexual ..read more

Bisexuality and how it’s not your choice
Queer Voices - Bi & Pansexual

Being bisexual isn’t something that should be difficult to understand, but for many that aren’t part of the bi+ community it is a constant puzzle and even mythical. Pop music celebrity Aaron Carter has drawn praise and criticism since coming out as bisexual recently, sending out what non-bisexual people believe to be mixed messages or queerbaiting. Through social media, Carter announced to the world that he was bisexual. Initially not using the term, but would later do so in a radio interview. Since then he has performed at an LGBTQIA+ club, for the first time, where he broke down in tears on ..read more

Social media and it’s role in bisexual awareness
Queer Voices - Bi & Pansexual

When I was in my early teens working out my sexuality was a constant struggle, I never had the internet to lean on, realizing I was attracted to boys and girls around me would cause high stress and long-term mental health issues. There were two options when it came to sexuality, you were either gay or straight, being bisexual wasn’t spoken about, and for me, something I didn’t know existed. It was the 1990s and discovering bisexuality and being bisexual was a daunting task; by the time I had reached early adulthood I had endured depression and anxiety through my sexuality. From a young age, I ..read more

Youtube speaks: pan, bi, queer- similar but different
Queer Voices - Bi & Pansexual

This blog is all about queer identities. In a careful analysis of my past posts, I noticed that I haven’t talked in my opinion what is enough of nonbinary sexual orientations like bisexuality and pansexuality. I think these are two identities that are often summarized as just saying queer, possibly because they are tough to explain. So I thought I’d clear up any misconceptions by using infographics. I think these identities can be defined differently by different people, so I went to YouTube to help me out on defining them. Check out the videos I used in the sources at the bottom. What did ..read more

On bisexual erasure
Queer Voices - Bi & Pansexual

After talking about femme-invisibility, I’d like to talk about another community that is often not visible within the community: the bisexual community. While I’ve written about erasure and the bisexual community, I think it’s important on this topic more directly.** **See the addition to the definition of bisexuality in my original piece here. Gay or Straight Binary To start off, in our binary society, a lot of us define sexual orientation as either gay or straight. This is a problem because it leaves no space for folks who are bisexual folks. This also comes along with the erasure in relatio ..read more

Bi vs. pan: i’m both and i’m not sorry

The year is 2003. The media is buzzing about an anticipated event that will occur at the MTV Video Music Awards: Britney Spears and Madonna are totally going to kiss on stage! Wow!! With a small amount of embarrassment, I admit that it’s something that I really want to see, if only because there is little in the TV of seeing two girls kissing. I don’t care if it’s for the ratings. I was 13, questioning my sexuality, and wanted to see a piece of me on the big screen. So I watched the kiss happen live. It was refreshing. The word “bisexual” was in my vocabulary, but at the time there w ..read more

Sexually ambiguous
Queer Voices - Bi & Pansexual

Constantly I am just confused on what I want. What I’m looking for. Whether it’s who I want, as in my sexuality, or just what I want, I always seem to find myself confused and unsure. Sexuality is very fluid and subject to change constantly, but it’s aggravating when you want to put a label on yourself but can’t. I’ve gone from bisexual, to pansexual, to bisexual again, to being a lesbian, and now I’m just not putting a label on it. I cannot seem to comprehend what I truly want and it’s tiring. Maybe I’m never going to be able to figure it out. Maybe I’m just this sexually ..read more

The “virginity” of a bisexual
Queer Voices - Bi & Pansexual

Nervous laughing. Sweaty palms. Rapid heart rate. A fluttering feeling in your stomach. If you’re experiencing these symptoms under normal circumstances then I might recommend that you see a doctor. But if you’re experiencing them while getting naked with another person, well then congratulations my friend, because you’re probably about to get it on for the first time. That’s right we’re talking about sex, baby. More specifically, we’re talking about “virginity” (that socially-constructed not-real thing everyone seems to be obsessed with). Oh, virginity, one of the many frivolous preoccupation ..read more

Be kind to your bi and pan friends – bisexual awareness day
Queer Voices - Bi & Pansexual
by Emma Matters

Today is bisexual visibility day, so I wanted to discuss the stigmas and resulting issues surrounding the bi and pan communities. I myself identify as pansexual and feel that I share many of the experiences that are discussed in the bi community, particularly exclusion from queer and straight communities alike. It’s a phase. No, it really really isn’t, I promise. That isn’t to say that no one has ever experimented with a partner that identifies in a different way from the partners they are normally with, and then decided that they didn’t have interest there, but that does not m ..read more
