Although I am trained principally as an organist and pianist, it has dawned on me in recent months (too much enforced thinking time perhaps?) that it is singing which has become my obsession. Not for myself, but for others. More than that – when someone told me a few weeks ago that I was first and foremost a musician, I surprised myself at how passionately I defended myself as being a teacher before I am a musician. Not every student at Monkton can sing. But every one of them knows that once they are ready to learn, all they have to do is ask, and I will help them to find their voice. As a result, I always have several students at any one time who form part of my unofficial ‘research programme’ into what it is which causes people to declare themselves unable to sing.
