Experimenting with texture and the appearance of softness. My wife reminded me of a series I did years ago. I did a series of chalk and gesso drawings that were based on the figure. The overall texture was almost Pollock-like in that they were very spontaneous and drippy. The chalk on top was very soft and sensual. I started doing this rose series after buying a set of alcohol-based markers to use as an “underpainting” for my drawings. I have been working on linen textures for over 30 years, more recently with black linen. Time to try something new…but the closer I look, very old.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the late 90s, while I was working full time as an art director and working on my MFA in drawing at Colorado State. I have struggled with depression and manic episodes ever since. Medication has helped occasionally, but over the last year, I was diagnosed with Tardive Dyskinesia, unnatural, and uncontrollable body movements (my jaw) caused by bipolar medications.
