Now that the JRTC redevelopment has officially launched, I’m excited to share that I’ll periodically document the project’s progress for Google. Here’s one last look at the JRTC before it was formally decommissioned late last year. Stay tuned for more as I help capture the renovation! Aurora Borealis over Illinois

I’m still in shock we saw the aurora borealis early on Saturday morning (May 11). Between off-the-charts forecasts for a massive geomagnetic storm, and incredible photos coming out of Europe, we didn’t want to miss a chance to see the Northern Lights. With no real plans place, Amy and I raced out to Rockford on Friday evening. We made a pit stop at her parents’ house to change and prep, then headed out to darker skies in Pecatonica, IL and hoped…We waited out thunderstorms and dense clouds, but were finally rewarded with an incredible show starting around 12:30am. While the aurora borealis wer ..read more

I recently stopped by the CTARPM project to document the progress for my friends at Ardmore Roderick. The goal was to capture some photos – drone and conventional – of the new L tracks and flyover near the Belmont station along with a few images of the Argyle platform reconstruction. Hopefully they’ll have me back for some photos of the massive gantry setting the new precast concrete track segments! For years people have asked where they could buy prints of my photos. And for over a decade the answer was always the same: “nowhere, except through me.” That’s why I’m so excited to announce that I’m finally selling prints in a retail setting: the Chicago Architecture Center’s Design Store. This is the only retail location that sells my work. The initial collection of five photos is available in two sizes: 11×14 and 5×7; the latter are lightly mounted to 8×10 mats. PRICE 11×14: $54.95 5×7 (matted to 8×10): $24.95 The prints are archival-quality fine-art giclées. Giclée is a high-quality di ..read more

It’s that time of the year again! Here’s a rundown of all the photos in my 2024 desktop calendar. They’ll be on sale soon! Stay tuned to my Instagram page around Thanksgiving for the launch. Once they’re on sale, I’ll have a link right here, too ___________________ JANUARY: The El Niño weather pattern predicted for this winter may bring warmer, dryer conditions to the Great Lakes, but I always hold out hope for one bitterly cold snap to freeze up the river. It’s a sight to behold – especially from atop Salesforce Tower.   FEBRUARY: This photo was taken in October during a snowstorm on Ha ..read more

Terminal 5: O’Hare’s newest extension

The new extension of Terminal 5 is O’Hare Airport’s latest effort to modernize one of the world’s busiest airports. In 2019 the project officially broke ground and was built by Austin Power Partners; a joint venture between Austin Commercial, Power Construction, and UJAMAA Construction. The project page on Power’s website sums of the project details better than I can, so here’s an excerpt: “The project increased the terminal’s capacity by 25% to improve efficiency and reduce delays. Passenger amenity space was increased by 75%, and the existing building was expanded by approximately 350,000 s ..read more

Willis Tower: Views from the 90th floor rooftop

To help celebrate the  50th anniversary of Willis Tower, the Skydeck team invited me and a few other photographers (like Mike Meyers and Barry Butler) onto the 90th level roof to take in the views. The evening started off cloudy and overcast, but just around sunset the clouds parted for the sun to paint the sky in various hues of orange, red, and magenta. And yes, it was windy up there. Strong up drafts and eddies swirled as the wind struck the tower and flowed up over the ledge. Interesting fact: the 90th level setback of Willis Tower – at 1,186′ is the third tallest *roof* in the city ..read more

My friends at OKW Architects commissioned me to photograph the recently renovated Johnson College Prep in Englewood – part of the Noble Charter Schools network. Designed by OKW and built by UJAMAA Construction, the updates to the school include a new plaza, modern signage, a relocated ADA-compliant ramp, and a dramatic 3-story glass entryway that glows at night. A new slatted canopy tops off this design – literally and figuratively – to give the school an impactful presence. Speaking of glowing, here’s Johnson College Prep during blue hour:   Our photoshoot took place on the schools’ las ..read more

The Chicago Architecture Center invited me and Amy to tag along on their Industry Council River Cruise on June 20th. Not only did we enjoy a picturesque evening on the river (isn’t it always?), but we were treated to behind-the-scenes insights from some of Chicago’s most accomplished architects. Once we embarked from the dock, the skyline came alive with stories revealed by the architects sharing unique perspectives on their projects visible from the river. Carol Ross Barney of Ross Barney Architects was first up. Fresh off her prestigious AIA Gold Medal win, Barney spoke about the Chicago Riv ..read more

April Storms

It’s been a busy start to storm season here at NUPHQ (I.e. our balcony). Since moving to our new home in Pilsen – with a north-facing skyline view – I’ve been eagerly awaiting the start of the spring storm season. We moved here last June, but there weren’t many photogenic storms to be had. But, 2023 is off to an incredible start. March 31st:  A powerful storm swept across the Midwest – generating 22 tornados in Illinois alone! While the severe storms missed Chicago, some turbulent skies appeared above the city. Granted, this happened in March, but I consider it an appetizer for April. Ap ..read more
