Enjoying brutalist beauty on Southbank

The National Theatre, love it or hate it, is even more stunning in a cool and soft winter light.   Designed by Denys Lasdun and completed in the mid 70’s it’s a beautiful brute to photograph.  The rough cast concrete surface imprinted by timber planks are its signature forming the vast terraces (or Strata as he called them) as well as the numerous walkways inside and out.  The pale concrete designed to reflect Waterloo Bridge and nearby Somerset House bounce the light gently and I could happily spend several days photographing it although had to settle for a few hours one crisp ..read more

Re-greening the cities

Dense urban areas need all the greenery they can get – it really is a no brainer.   Walking around the developments in Vauxhall, London recently it was so striking that very little thought had gone into the environment or community wellbeing with barely any sizeable green areas or accessible spaces.   It was a little depressing and surely easy enough to incorporate something that crucially  could benefit not only the environment but sociability, physical and mental health.   I’m not sure there was any thought of the ‘in-between’.   There are certainly some impressive b ..read more

Super stylish luxury offices

London’s PLP Architecture has recently completed a super stylish, high end new office headquarters in the heart of London. It feels like you’ve fallen into a delicious box of luxury chocolates on the ground floor with curves a plenty. The exquisite carpentry and amazing white desk warrants smoothing as you pass by, (I was very happy just photographing the desk as you can see below), and as you look up the nod to the glamour of air travel begins. There is a feeling you’re passing under a fuselage and the fun aeroplane style windows of the first floor office are inspired.  Sitting ..read more

Green and curvaceous in the City

There are curves aplenty and wonderful garden terraces throughout this amazing build in the City of London. It has been developed by British Land and sits directly next to Liverpool Street Station and Broadgate. It was rebuilt and extended from an existing 1980’s building and designed by the wonderful Hopkins Architects. They stripped it back and designed vast floors of much more open flexible office space, a truly spectacular elliptical atrium, wonderful terraces with remarkable views as well as retail units and walkways to navigate you through and around the huge development. What a project ..read more

Astro turf office

There seems to have been a theme to commissions recently based around capturing offices where companies have invested in making their workplaces much more appealing. Why work from home when you could hang out in this cafe style workplace? I loved the astro turf which ran a fun route through these modern offices. Simple touch but really effective. No distracting table football to play with but assume a real soft ball gets kicked around at lunch time or some kind of race? The outside space was fantastic too, almost made me want an office job ..read more

A day at Glorious Goodwood

Goodwood racecourse has a lovely new space to glide around and sup champagne in whilst watching the horses.   The latest addition is designed by Hopkins Architects and is perfectly placed in the Richmond enclosure with amazing views over the racecourse and the Sussex Downs.   It houses the Veuve Clicquot champagne and seafood bar and has wonderfully spacious decks reminiscent of a luxury liner.   Access is via two wide gentle swooping stairs either side of the bar and they provide a great entrance allowing space and time to sashay in your finery en route to the bubbles.  Hopkins previous p ..read more

Deluxe working spaces in Dublin

Shooting for one of my favourite design agencies, we had a great 2 days in Dublin, capturing elements of Hibernia’s wonderful office environments. This part of Ireland has been dubbed Europe’s Silicon Valley and hosts Twitter, LinkedIn, eBay, Google and Facebook to name a few. The skyline is full of cranes and it’s still booming. Creating inspiring offices seems to be Hibernia’s forte. It’s not just the new developments they’re known for, but also for regenerating and adapting existing properties into some cool spaces that attract the youthful .com clientele operating out of Ireland t ..read more
