The closure bell tolls once more, this time for Turnips in Borough Market. The restaurant launched as a pop-up from chef Tomas Lidakevicius (formerly of Jason Atherton’s City Social) in 2020, and became permanent the following year. It was connected to the Turnips greengrocers, a family-run fruit and veg wholesaler which has been part of Borough Market for over 30 years.  The al fresco restaurant was open for lunch and in the evenings, when Turnips had finished trading for the day, and served veg-forward small and sharing plates, with recent menus including cévennes onion with ..read more

In what might be one of our most apocalyptic-sounding headlines of 2024, five escaped Household Cavalry horses have been on the loose in central London this morning.  The five horses were partaking in the Household Cavalry’s daily morning exercise on Horseguards Parade, Whitehall, when they threw off their riders, made up of the Lifeguards and Blues & Royals.  Videos of the horses, one blood-covered, surfaced online. The horses were spotted bolting through streets in Victoria and down to Aldwych, even getting as far as Tower Bridge.  ..read more

Though the Barbican’s accounts department would probably have been into it, it’s probably fair to say that a third lengthy winter season for the RSC’s stunning stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s classic fantasy animation ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ might have been pushing it a bit. Indeed, it had been assumed by many that a West End transfer would follow its first season. Now that’s finally becoming a reality, as the puppet-driven smash books a length 34-week 2025 run at the huge Gillian Lynne Theatre. Whether this is a last hurrah for the awesome, six Olivier Award-winning spe ..read more

Fancy living like a president but don’t fancy having to run an entire country? Now could be your chance. A house in southwest London has gone on the market that looks just like the White House, offering all the glamour of Washington DC without world peace resting on your shoulders.  The property’s real name is The Old Garden and it’s in the leafy, well-heeled neighbourhood of Richmond. Designed by celebrated ‘new classical’ (think columns, ornamentation, that sort of stuff) British architect Quinlan Terry, the grand property spans a total of 20,000 square feet.  Insid ..read more

A London fish and chips shop has been named the best in the UK
Time Out London

London is known for many things: tall buildings, fast-paced locals, extremely overpriced pints of beer. But, unfortunately for some, it’s been a while since fried fish, chunky chips and mushy peas made that list.  In the National Fish and Chip Awards earlier this year, only one London chippy was nominated. But Stones Fish and Chips in Acton came home empty handed, losing out to chip shops in Wales, Glastonbury and Darlington, to name but a few. This miserable result for the capital led many to believe that London’s well and truly lost the art of deep-fried fish and vinegar-soaked ch ..read more

The cost-of-living crisis clearly didn’t hit everyone in quite the same way, It seems as if regulars at the Revery Bar in Mayfair have still got more than a few pennies to rub together, as the bar has just launched a cocktail that costs a whopping £220.  Called Maven of Mayfair, you can now order the extremely expensive drink at the Park Lane establishment. It comes in a crystal flute (I mean, you would hope so too), and is made up of Clase Azul tequila, Grand Marnier, Lillet Rose and Italicus bergamot liqueur. So far, so standardly posh, but it’s the edition of ..read more
