Salkantay Trek - Self Guided Backpacking Trip in Peru to Machu Picchu

I used reddit a bunch to build the itinerary of this trip, as there isn't a tonne of easily laid out information online to do the Salkantay Trek in Peru self guided. I would recommend doing this if you're a competent backpacker and comfortable hiking through lots of elevation/doing some long days. I did this trek 100% self guided in March 2024. It went fannnnnntastic, highly highly recommend. Follow me on IG @ kristabshaw , I posted a bunch on there about the trip. Click through my highlight and it shows parts of the trek, and I also posted about logistics , still have been doing that too ..read more

First time camper/backpacker due to an Internship, what are some underrated or essential supplies I should look into?

I was recently offered and accepted an internship that requires 4+ days of camping in very remote locations with no amenities or utilities every week this summer. I am up for the challenge, but since I have not camped since I was little (and even then it was at campgrounds!) I was curious what underrated/essential supplies I should buy as a first time “intense” camper. We will also be hiking to the site with all of the agency sampling gear in addition to our own individual gear and food. I am not sure how many miles, but I am assuming it varies per testing site. The internship provides a toil ..read more

Camp shoes?

I’m going backpacking soon and want a pair of camp/water shoes. I will be swimming and need something under my feet so flip flops are out of the question. I have chacos but those are way too heavy. Would you all recommend teva original (11 oz) or teva hurricane xlt2 (15.6 oz)? Or is there are different shoe you’d recommend? I know I can cut weight going flip flops but with the rocks in the water I’d rather have some type of water shoe. submitted by /u/Its_a_username4 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
