Reading Time: < 1 minute 4.30am and I really should have double-checked the “tune” I selected for my alarm call. I’m in Kings Lynn Travel Lodge and as much as I love Foo Fighters, it’s not the gentle awakening I was hoping for. Commissioned to document the International Curlew Fieldworkers Conference and nursing a pretty heavy cold, I layer up, and top up the paracetamol plus caffeine that’s keeping me moving. It’s one of the highlights of the weekend, a wader spectacular at RSPB Snettisham, Norfolk. It’s easy to see why people travel the world to visit this place, it is a three-sixty-degr ..read more

First Curlews of the Year
Walking Photographer by Rich Bunce

Reading Time: < 1 minute Well, it happened. After too many moments agonising whether my first curlew encounter of the year should be a planned affair or just left to chance, the inevitability of the latter occurred. An evening walk over Eastfields, Burley in Wharfedale, leading an organised owl walk. Four, five, six. Flying North West at dusk. A seemingly small group for this time of year, around here at least. At a glance, all beaks within the group appeared relatively small. Possible youngsters? Possibly males? Definitely not whimbrel.   As the walk progressed the light faded to con ..read more

Spring in the Land of Spec Savers

Reading Time: < 1 minute Springtime at the In-Law’s As Summer slowly dissipates into autumn and a new generation of feathered friends prepare to either chase the summer south or fatten up ahead of the leaner months, I’ve been reflecting on the opposite side of our British calendar, when Winter relented to Spring.   Anyone familiar with the typical turnaround times of my personal photos will no doubt be dumbstruck at me sharing photos of anything occurring within 24-month window, but there you are! Spring in the Land of Spec Savers It’s the Easter holidays and we’re at my father ..read more

GPS Tagging Curlews in the Yorkshire Dales

Reading Time: < 1 minute Back in April, I was privileged to join British Trust of Ornithology (BTO) researchers in the Yorkshire Dales as they fitted a select number of curlews with GPS tags. In recent years the plight of this culturally iconic wader has become more and more urgent. With a 40% decline in Curlew betweeb 1995 and 2015, the BTO responded with the BTO Curlew Appeal which aims to reverse the decline. The GPS tags will help build a clearer picture in identifying potential causes and highlighting the possible conservation areas for intervention ..read more

The Jubilee Before the Coronation

Reading Time: < 1 minute A lot can change in a year, and transitions don’t get much more high profile than the succession of the crown. I’m not much of a royalist, but I am fascinated by change and capturing moments in time. With the coronation just days away I realised that the photos from the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Burley in Wharfedale were sitting on a hard drive gathering virtual dust… The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Burley in Wharfedale, 5th June 2022 The post The Jubilee Before the Coronation appeared first on Walking Photographer ..read more

Tree Creepers, the line between determination and flexibility

Reading Time: < 1 minute One of my biggest weaknesses as a photographer and as a human being, is that I’m easily distracted.  Catch me on a particularly bad day and you’ll discover a house full of tell-tale signs. From the keys left hanging outside the door to a half-made sandwich abandoned on the sideboard. You might even find a packet of crisps absent-mindedly misplaced in the fridge.  My personal photography projects can experience similar moments of mind wanderings and distraction. Over time I’ve learned to be more disciplined with my approach to photography, but sometimes, I ..read more

Getting Otter on the River Wharfe, In January

Reading Time: < 1 minute A crisp morning by the river in late January results in one of the best mornings for spotting and identifying five individual otters all heading up stream towards Ilkley. The first being three otters, either three young or two young and a mother? (the latter previously reported from several accounts) then, about 15 metres upstream  a single adult swimming against the current, followed by another adult sighting 20 metres downstream rooting around in a sunken tree. The other footage is from the previous morning, watching an adult fish, interestingly swimming and ..read more

Christmas Eve in Chessington

Reading Time: < 1 minute It’s Christmas Eve 2022, and I’m at my parents house in Chessington, where London suburbs unfurl into the Surrey borders. As the festive evening draws in, a childish excitement flushes through me.  Familiar naive questions drift to the forefront of my brain. Will he visit me tonight? Can I stay awake long enough to witness his arrival? And have I been good enough to be rewarded with what I want? As Christmas Eve turns into Christmas Day, the anticipation of checking my camera is reminiscent of getting the photos back from a roll of film sent off to the lab.&nb ..read more

Red Squirrels of The Yorkshire Dales, A Tonic to the Ears

Reading Time: 2 minutes I’ve been blessed and cursed with an over active imagination from the moment my eyes began interpreting their immediate and wider surroundings. So when I awoke at midnight with what felt like crochet needles being probed into my ear drums and a jaw that felt like it was trying to detach itself from my face; needless to say that wild imagination rocketed through a safari of grim possibilities and outcomes. Fast forward two packs of own-brand painkillers and 6000mg of antibiotics and the infection still lingers, though less ferocious (until I blow my nose, which heralds ..read more
