Hi there! I'm a data analyst for a streaming service. A lot of my day is coding in Python and SQL with a smattering of shell scripting and creating generic business reporting like Tableau dashboards etc.
I've become very interested in geospatial data the last year and I'm starting to think about it as a career. However I don't have a background in environmental science - I took geography and chemistry back in high school but that's about it.
Would a career as a GIS analyst be too lofty an ambition? I don't want to get into the career if I don't have the scientific background/know-how. A local ..read more

It would be great to hear about your experiences and be able to learn about your experiences.

Hey y’all, wondering if anyone here has MS and how it’s affected your GIS career.
Just got my dx and weighing career options, but so far so good. Developer/analyst with about 4 yr experience with the occasional field work.
MS = multiple sclerosis

I love my job. I’m starting a new promotion on Monday too as a GIS Quality Control Specialist. I don’t see any reason for me to move jobs any time soon unless some red flags become obvious. But considering many people do end up leaving to get better pay in this industry, I do wonder what the “job hopping” is like specifically in GIS in this sub.
Thanks for always having good discussions here :)

I am working on an ArcGIS Pro project. I have a layer of 40 smapling points with a radius of 40 meters scattered around a river. Then I have a characterisation layer that provides information about vegetation and land use.
What I need is to analyze the percentage of each vegetation type for each sampling point independently.
When I clip the characterisation layer, I need the polygons to stay inside each respective circle in order to proceed with my analysis. However, as shown in the image, this does not happen simply by clipping features using feature function.
Is there an easier way to d ..read more

Hi, I am working on classifying drone imagery using the Support Vector Machine in ArcGis Pro. My imagery is around 3cm GSD and focuses on parcel-level areas, so generally around the size of a football field or less. I am interested in hearing from anyone who has experience with image classification or object extraction and best practices they could recommend! Thanks!

What are the current top end desktop pc processors for ortho and 3d model processing of large maps? (excluding threadripper) AMD vs Intel... Pix4d and Correlator3d. Is number of cores or single thread performance more important ?

I'm trying to clip the DEM to the state boundary, but it appears to be getting stuck. It just says "Saving dataset" at 0%

I have polygons of lakes, ponds, and basins. I have a water surface elevation line feature class, as well as a water surface elevation raster.
I want to buffer my polygons by 1 mile, but for the buffer to only go the path of least resistance (toward the raster cells with lower water surface elevations). The water won't start travelling upgradient.
Is this possible in ArcGIS Pro?

I’m about to graduate with an AAS in GIS. A good portion of my GIS classes included ESRI training that required a maintenance subscription through my school that I’ll lose next month. Is there anything particularly beneficial I should take while I still have free access?
