Language is like Fireworks

Why wait to communicate?! As with fireworks, language begins with an initial “ah-ha” moment and then explodes into a host of words or signs – and it’s truly awesome. But it must be accessible. Sign Language provides the visual exposure needed for Deaf children and a kinesthetic approach to learning that benefits everyone. While ASL provides an earlier opportunity to express and communicate through an actual language, it doesn’t have to stop there. What an opportunity to become bilingual! And it supports the acquisition of multiple spoken languages too! Join us this summer and into the fall to ..read more

Baby Fingers…A Musical Journey through Language & Learning
My Baby Fingers

We’re halfway through our 19th year – as I celebrate my older son turning 20 and younger son turning 18 – and I am, once again, wondering where the time has gone. Baby Fingers became an LLC in January 2000, after a few months of gathering some mom/baby pairs in my home to sing & sign together. I had begun to develop the program and our curriculum based in large part on my master’s thesis, and truly inspired by my older son. His ability to respond to ASL-only (voice off) as young as 4-5 months and begin to communicate in sign just shy of 6.5 months was beyond exciting (our story). Seeing re ..read more

Life in the Bubble

As I plan and prepare for our summer programs at Baby Fingers, I have been thinking about summer camp. I have had the privilege of watching my children grow up at camp – quite literally, because I have been there all along. My husband and I met at a week-long music workshop hosted at a very special teen summer camp that he had attended. In 2006, my 5 and 7 year olds and I made our way back to Warwick, NY so I could direct a day camp on the very grounds of that teen leadership overnight program. We spent 3 summers there before moving to Great Barrington, MA, or as we say, the 01230… the Eisner ..read more

BABY FINGERS: BABY SIGN LANGUAGE 3/20/19 Deb Flashenberg: “One of my favorite parts of early motherhood was listening to the scrumptious babble of my new baby. That was, until a level of frustration grew from our inability to communicate effectively. My son was often trying to share his needs and it much of the time, it just went over my head. If you are experiencing a similar predicament or want to avoid it as much as possible, you may consider learning baby sign language. In this episode of Yoga | Birth | Babies, I speak with music therapist, teacher of the Deaf, and founder of Baby Fingers ..read more

Journey through Pregnancy and Parenting
My Baby Fingers

Music was the first way we actually communicated with our children. While pregnant, I could feel them moving differently based on whether I was playing guitar or my husband was playing piano. When we sang, that changed things, too. I found that they tended to slow down their movements in the womb if I began to sing and often moved around even more as my husband sang, almost like they were looking for him. Unless it was night time…when I got into bed each night, my husband would sing a lullaby right next to my belly and all movement settled. During my first pregnancy, I fell. I was about 24 wee ..read more

Have you begun to sign with your baby and wonder now about the next steps? Everyone’s journey will be different, so we always recommend that you take it at your own pace. If your baby is under a year old and/or has not begun to sign yet, we encourage you to take our level one class – or to re-take our level one class. We often include a new song, or someone in class will ask a question that leads to you learning a new sign. And at each stage of your baby’s development, you’ll each gain something different from the experience. If your baby is over a year and/or has begun to sign – or you’re jus ..read more

Bilingualism: Teachers, Parents & Children – Baby Fingers Parent Guest Blog
My Baby Fingers

Written by Amarilis Rivas, M.Ed. Bilingualism has always played a huge role in my life.  As a native Spanish speaker, we moved to the US from Puerto Rico in the early 80’s.  I was 5 years old at that time, and I was already reading and writing in Spanish. Imagine the frustration that being unable to communicate created in me as a young child!  I went from being at the top of my class in Puerto Rico to receiving ESL pull-out at my new school, a class that I felt removed me from the real action in the Kindergarten classroom. Throughout my childhood, my parents provided me with multiple opportuni ..read more
