Valheim and the Mistlands – Uphill Both Ways in the Snow
The Ancient Gaming Noob

I mentioned previously that we established our first foothold in the mistlands in Valheim.  However, since then we have not made a lot of progress.  In part, that is because Conan Exiles showed up and has become the shiny new thing to explore.  Well worth the 12 bucks and the server hosting on that front. But the other reason is… well, not to get all whiny, but the mistlands are kind of a tough place to play. I see mist, but where is the land? Or, rather, it feels very much like a change in the approach to the game after the first five biomes.  But, since it is the first ..read more

All in on Conan Exiles
The Ancient Gaming Noob
by Wilhelm Arcturus

If you were expecting me to end up narrating a tour of Tamriel and our group’s experiences in The Elder Scrolls Online, I fear you I have some bad news for you.  After a couple of weeks of poking our toes into ESO, the arrival of Conan Exiles has grabbed out attention and left Tamriel in the rear view mirror for now. Conan Exiles Valheim too for a bit, judging from our play time in Conan Exiles, though there are some other factors in play that is a topic for another post. Why has Conan Exiles grabbed us? It certainly hasn’t been for any epic fights.  In fact, we seem to die quite a ..read more

The Purloined Letter – WoW Subscriber Numbers Leak from a GDC Presentation

The 2024 Game Developer’s Conference was up in San Francisco last week, so I have been seeing tidbits of info coming out of it.  There are, of course, still people pushing blockchain there and AI is the big trend of the year because the finance people first and foremost want to eliminate as many expensive creative and development positions as possible.  SSDD. But yesterday Shintar put up a post over on her blog about a chart that has leaked out of a presentation about the first 30 years of the Warcraft franchise.  She has the details on that, so you should go there, but the char ..read more

Thoughts on Dune Part 2
The Ancient Gaming Noob
by Wilhelm Arcturus

My wife and I went to see Dune Part 2 on its opening weekend.  We made a bit of an event out of it by watching Dune Part 1 on streaming the night before. She was very glad we did, because the second movie pretty much picks right up from where the first left, so if you don’t remember who was who you’re going to be working hard on context clues for some of the cast.  Not all of them.  I mean, they can’t stop telling you who Paul is and the prophecy that may or not foretell his destiny.  But the rest of the people who come and go in the film, you might be a bit confused withou ..read more

Two TTC Sotiyos Destroyed in Perimeter Brawl

There has been a low level conflict going on in null sec, with Imperium and The Initiative facing off against Pandemic Horde and Fraternity for a while now.  Neither side has been stoked for a full scale invasion… in part because CCP has said they will be making changes to null sec, something that makes everybody nervous… so there have been clashes in the southeast, where Pandemic Horde had already been in violation of the now lapsed agreement.  They and Fraternity have pushed into Catch, where the latter dropped a Keepstar then did a whole lot of nothing. The Imperium, in a counter ..read more

First Forays into the Mistlands in Valheim
The Ancient Gaming Noob

Having defeated Yagluth and feeling ourselves, if not masters of the plains, then at least not fearing to tread there day and night, it was time to turn our gaze towards the mistlands biome. We had actually been poking our nose into the mistlands a bit already after Potshot came ashore on a stretch of black forest that bordered on the new biome.  There we started to try to come to grips with what we were facing… and it was not pretty. The mistlands are the first new post-early access launch biome and the developers clearly felt they needed to dial things up a bit as we were all traipsing ..read more

Blizzard Discovers Battle Royale with the WoW Plunderstorm Event

There was a bit of speculation about the pirate flag entry on the World of Warcraft 2024 roadmap.  It had no details, just “10.2.6” which was assumed (correctly) to be the patch number.  But what it might actually mean… nobody outside of Blizzard knew… or if they did, they weren’t talking. World of Warcraft retail 2024 roadmap We started getting some hints and finally a date for it last week.  And, yesterday morning the patch update went live.  I did not land at 5:50am (that would be ten to six, or 10.2.6), the update took well into the afternoon Pacific time, but news of ..read more

Taking on Yagluth in Valheim
The Ancient Gaming Noob
by Wilhelm Arcturus

Since we are on our third pass though Valheim since it opened up into early access Potshot and I have been doing pretty well when it comes to each of the biome bosses.  Eikthyr, The Elder, Bonemass, and Moder all fell in pretty reasonable fights. But Yagluth is a bit different.  We never quite got around to Yagluth on our first run, there being nothing past the plains biome at that time.  And our second run was… well a bit of a fiasco.  I had to leave for about an hour mid-way through it only to come back and find the corpses had continued to pile up. So this time around Po ..read more

Dropping into Conan Exiles
The Ancient Gaming Noob

What I really need right now is another game to play, right?  Potshot and I are already waist deep in Valheim, the group is sizing up Elder Scrolls Online, there is a possible war brewing in null sec over in EVE Online, and I have been running around EverQuest on yet another nostalgia tour.  Do I have any gaming time left? Of course I don’t, but when did that ever stop me when the mood struck? Rewinding a bit, back during the the Steam Winter Sale I picked up a few co-op survival-ish titles looking for something that might be of interest to our group.  I solicited for other poss ..read more
