I’m writing for a brand new publication called North Fork Neighbors/ Mattituck-Cutchogue. The magazine is free and is sent out monthly to residents. This publication is print only, not digital, so it’s not available online. However, I am able to share the feature article each month on my blog. To get on the mailing list contact me at svillani@bestversionmedia.com or the publisher Art Williams at arthurwilliams@bestversionmedia.com (no P.O. boxes, residential addresses only). Here is the December issue featuring Wendy Zuhoski. Enjoy! Each community has a couple of folks that everyone knows and ..read more

Book Review: The Hamptons Kitchen

The Hamptons Kitchen: Seasonal Recipes Pairing Land and Sea by Hillary Davis and Stacy Dermont This is a book that emphasizes local food eaten in season, which is the way I prefer to cook after working at the farmers’ market for 30 years (first job there was selling apples for a farmer from the Hudson Valley). I’ve been cooking from this book through the summer and fall, and I have a few recipes picked out to make this winter as the lockdown continues and the weather gets colder, like clam pie and braised short ribs and caramelized sweet potatoes. Stacey Dermont is a food writer from the East ..read more

Two Easy Bluefish Recipes
Blue Moon Fish
by Stephanie Villani

Bluefish sometimes gets a bad rap for being too “fishy” but we sell a lot of it. It has a strong flavor and is oily (like mackerel) and contains healthy omega-3 fatty acids. People who say they don’t like it sometimes change their tune once they taste truly fresh blue. Generally bluefish are plentiful around Long Island and the Northeast and are caught all up and down the East Coast. Big schools of them feeding ravenously are a common sight, and they are fun to catch. This year we have seen a lot less of them and no one really knows why. Recently we have started to catch more and the fish caug ..read more

Shelter Island Sojurn

Shelter Island is a great place to socially distance, on the beach, hiking or biking (watch out for deer ticks, they are abundant here). It’s a 5-minute ferry ride from Greenport and a shortcut to the South Fork. If you are headed that way we’ve found two new places to recommend.   Finley’s Fiction is an independent bookstore in Shelter Island Heights. It’s friendly and bright and a great place to browse for a beach book when you get off the ferry. They’ve also got some lovely gift items, definitely worth a stop! Here’s a link to an Epicurious article about how to tell if your farmers’ market is legit. My best quote that didn’t make it: If the farmer’s hands and clothes are dirty, that’s a good sign! How To Tell If Your Farmers Market is Full of Actual Farmers ..read more

Heat Wave Dinner Ideas
Blue Moon Fish

Dangerously hot and humid weather is slated for the weekend. We will be at the Greenmarket with extra ice and a smaller amount of fish. Get there before the heat of the day as we are hoping to wrap up on the early side (12:30 for Tribeca, 2:00 for Brooklyn) and hit the air conditioning!  Luckily the middle of July is prime time at the farmers’ market. Here are some quick, no cook ideas for dinner when it’s too hot to turn on the stove. Scallop Ceviche – Scallops and all ingredients except for citrus fruit can be found at the market. If you like to add fish to your ceviche, some good types to ..read more
