You might have noticed that not only has it been super quiet here, but that the site address has changed back to the wordpress form. I made the decision back before Christmas to move over to Squarespace and took my time to get used to the site and I’m now slowly starting to post again. If you fancy continuing to follow This Geeky Tangent, then head over to the new site! The newest post has just gone up (a Last Month Today, that post hasn’t gone anywhere) . All the old blogposts are still there in the archives, and I’m planning on updating a handful of them as I go, re-jigging templates and ju ..read more

Last Month Today | July & August 2020

The emotional rollercoaster that is 2020 has been continuing, with varying degrees of creative mojo. September is always a bit of a reset: schools start back, Christmas is on the horizon, with halloween and bonfire night between (and who knows what any of that will look like this year) and there’s generally a cosy autumnal anticipation in the air (for me, anyway!) Whilst there has not been much doing the last few months (outside of work), there has been a lot of thinking, and I’m slowly pulling things together to re-launch some items on my etsy, move the blog forward with some new ideas and g ..read more

I love a recipe book. I can see about 38 from where I’m sitting, with more at home and as many again on my kindle. And then there’s the internet. With more recipes than you could possibly imagine. With all the different sites, from blogs to bbc good food, it all gets a bit much to keep track of. I’ve been cooking more than ever – along with the rest of the country – and been more adventurous with it. But after you’ve made a recipe that first time, you start to play around with it, add this, take away that, swap out something else, and do all the tinkering that makes recipes your own. I decide ..read more

It’s been a while. Necessarily. There have been seismic shifts in June. June brought with it a swell in a movement that has long been overdue. You’d have been living under a rock to miss the Black Lives Matter movement (BLM). A month on, social media still has posts streaming through it. As it should. Whatever the world looked like when we went into lockdown, it will not look the same when we come out of it. It shouldn’t. I’m not going to sit here and tell you what to do, nor what I’m doing. I struggled with that for a while, wanting to come on here and do a whole post. But why? To make mysel ..read more

Pattern Weights | This Geeky Blog

My sewing has increased exponentially over the last few weeks, and with that the collection of all the bells and whistles you need. At the top of my list was pattern weights. I have no cutting table, which means I’m scrabbling around on the floor trying to cut things out – I’m still trying to find the optimum area of floor space for this – and I was using everything from candles, to my phone to my dvd case. So I popped over to Pintrest and Etsy to have a gander at what passed for a pattern weight. There were some fab ones on Etsy that I had in my basked for a fair wee while, but instead decid ..read more

One Foundation, Two Dishes | This Geeky Kitchen

Six weeks into lockdown and it’s been a fascinating food journey in what I need to eat, what the boy needs to eat, and how we use our food. We now have our regular order down, and we’re having fun expanding our food horizons – potatoes really are awesome! There are two dishes we keep coming back to, time and again: a soup for lunch times and a pasta sauce – the latter usually coming towards the end of a week cycle in the day(s) before the next order arrives. Both dishes have the same foundations (onion, carrot and celery), and I thought I’d share both of them for you here – I even managed to ..read more

A full month in lockdown, with no end in sight, but clearly very restless neighbours. I’m almost glad the rain has returned – people are back in their houses after apparently being a bit gung-ho about the whole thing over the last few days. Though, of course, to caveat this, I can only comment on the people I see outside my windows. I’ve been outside four times in April – if that. Would I rather be outside? Absolutely. Am I going to risk it? Oh hell no! Lockdown Lethargy is real, but I prefer it to the possible alternative. I cannot wait for the day I can comfortably go back into a supermarke ..read more

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a mixtape. They’ve not been as regular as I’d like, but such is Lockdown Lethargy. Thankfully, that feeling has been waning recently, and I’ve finally been paying attention to music again, so let’s get going! For album we have ‘Spring to Spring‘ by Hoppípolla. I stumbled across this short play album when settling down to listen to the new releases in Korea. This album is the perfect spring mix – and perfect for the situation in which we find ourselves in. It is mellow and calm, featuring gentle ballads and instrumentals. It is even, in some places, upli ..read more

Sending letters has always been my thing, and when I moved out to Hong Kong, they became my primary means of communication between myself and one of my uni friends, and we continue to write letters to each other to this day! Discovering the wealth of origami paper in Hong Kong, I started to make my own stationery. The process has gone through a wealth of evolutions, and now I can make a set of five in a pinch more than 30 minutes, if I’m not um-ing and ah-ing over the colour of paper. My stationery sets started out as a small, colourful envelope with some complimentary A6 size writing sheets ..read more

Here in the UK, we’ve been in lockdown for more than three weeks now, and it’s looking like (quite rightly) that it will be this way for some time. Aside from flour being impossible to source, we’ve been able to keep the food coming in (as an asthmatic, I won’t be stepping foot into a supermarket for some time, I feel) and it’s been fun experimenting with that we have and stretching our cooking skills. The boy and I have both been stepping up our game (I’d say he’s doing better than me and yes, I love it when I don’t have to cook, but he is a much better cook than he gives himself credit for ..read more
