On the very first day of school, I begin instilling in my students an appreciation for the neat and organized wonder that is our classroom.  I ask them if they like the way the classroom looks and tell them how long I worked to get it looking like this.  Then I explain that it is now up to all of us to work together and maintain this neat and orderly environment.  There are several five minute activities I use with my students to keep a clean classroom all year long! 5 Minute Activities for a Clean Classroom My favorite way to get a perfectly clean classroom is to spend ..read more

It's the 6th day of... This post may contain affiliate links to materials I recommend. One of my favorite (and most important) jobs as a teacher is character education.  I love finding ways of trying to make my students better citizens of our world.  Teaching them to be kind to others is a huge part of that.  The holidays are a wonderful time of the year to do some random acts of kindness!  A great kickoff book to introduce this idea to your students is Peter Claus and the Naughty List by Lawrence David. The first snow of the season is falling outside, and it's day 5 of my... Yesterday I shared my favorite snowman books to go along with a snowman themed holiday party, and today I'm sharing a beautiful art project that I found a few years back on A Faithful Attempt, a blog by a K-12 art teacher.  She had her students create pastel drawings on construction paper after reading Snowmen at Night.  You can read her post by clicking on the pic below. These are a couple of the drawings that my students made. After seeing all the different versions of the Snowmen at Night books ..read more

It's the 3rd day of my 12 Days of Holiday Ideas for the Classroom! A couple years ago, my class earned a reading celebration at some point in the winter, and as part of that celebration we had a snowman themed hot chocolate bar.  I think this would be a fabulous idea for a holiday party!   I brought in an assortment of thirty different mugs.  (If you've been teaching for any length of time, you should have plenty!)  I even decorated marshmallows with cake decorating gel to look like snowmen!   You could easily add other items like candy canes, caramel st ..read more

It is day 2 of my 12 Days of Holiday Ideas for the Classroom! One of my fifth grade buddies passed this next idea along to me a few years ago.  Kids obviously love receiving gifts, but they also get very excited giving gifts to others.  This idea gives students the opportunity to give gifts to their classmates without the inevitable disappointment that happens with a traditional gift exchange.   Start by having all of your students bring a Christmas stocking to school.  I have a hard time dealing with the mismatch effect of 30 different stockings so I purchased a cla ..read more

I use the school laminator at least a couple times a month, but how cool would it be to have your own?! These plastic pockets are perfect for stations and games!  How about for Scoot? Dry erase markers...no explanation necessary! Astr ..read more

It's a new year and time for the first 2017 edition of Show & Tell Tuesday! We will soon be getting a new member of our family!  These adorable little goldendoodles were born on New Year's Day, and Bonny will be deciding which one will be joining our family in about a month.  We can't wait! About a year ago, I was contacted by a writer from Scholastic's Teacher magazine.  She had read a blog post I wrote where I mentioned an activity I do with the book Rose Blanche.  It's a great historical fiction story that lends itself well to making inferences.  Yo ..read more
