Time flies when you're having fun, which we've been having while learning how to tell time in The Third Grade Learning Spot! We began our unit by creating model analog clocks, including labeling the hour and minute hands. We also labeled o'clock, quarter past, half past, and quarter to on them. When we lift the flap for each number the minutes are revealed. After learning how to identify the hour and minutes, students went on classroom scavenger hunt to find analog clock task cards and record what time each clock showed. Reading and Social Studies are being integrated during our Molly's Pilgrim and Thanksgiving units. Students are using lapbooks to expand their comprehension skills as we read Molly's Pilgrim, a story about an immigrant girl who helps her third grade class learn it takes all kinds of pilgrims to make Thanksgiving, not just the ones who were on the Mayflower. Students' lapbooks contain a vocabulary match, a character trait graphic organizer to compare and contrast main characters, graphic organizers, and comprehension questions to reflect on the story's conflict, resolution, and message. 3rd graders have become skilled geologists learning about the earth's surface. We started our unit reading books and watching videos about rocks and minerals, then recorded facts we learned on circle maps...  Next, the students created "Types of Rocks" flipbooks. Each book flap contains an illustration, definition, features, and examples of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.  During a rock classification activity students had a tasty time deciding which type of rock cookies and candy represented. We enjoyed turkey, chicken, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, salad, and brownies while watching Thanksgiving skits by 2nd and 4th grade. A special visitor, "Eli the Chanukah Elf",  arrived in our classroom before Chanukah to help us count down to the first night of the Festival of Lights... Eli left us a note about hidden chocolate gelt, which we found in our recess equipment box... Each day he's been popping up in a different spot of the classroom with ..read more

Leaves have been falling outside and we've been falling into lots of learning inside our classroom. In reading, we've been learning about character traits using the stories Officer Buckle and Gloria, Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon, and Allie's Basketball Dream. Students identified the difference between a character's physical features and character traits, then wrote them on Post-its, which were affixed to character anchor charts. Students connected Velcro character trait basketballs to actions proving them basketball hoops on an anchor chart. Our assessment on the stories will be Wednesday. In l ..read more
