What does that mean? 1.     We are starting with 1:1 private sessions by appointment only for those who do not have high-risk factors as outlined by the State of Washington. (Remember, online is still available for both privates and small group!) 2.     ALL staff instructors are planning on returning. Actual dates, tho ..read more

I have been working hard all week trying to work out the details on how to offer private sessions and group sessions remotely so that everyone can continue to have access to Pilates until we can reopen the studio. The best solution I could find was using Zoom video conferencing to offer online sessions. This will allow Soma Pilates clients to use their computer, phone, or tablet to take part in interactive private sessions or group sessions. While I have already completed several test sessions please bare with me as this is new to everyone and may need a couple of kinks ironed out. Ne ..read more

We are starting an exercise of the month feature here on the Soma Pilates blog. Our goal is to feature great exercises that you can do at home with little to no equipment. Now that June has arrived we’ve noticed that many of our clients are taking advantage of the beautiful weather to get outdoors and participate in activities like hiking, running, and walking. Since a common thread for all these activities is the need for good hip stability we are starting with a hip leveling exercise. Here you can see that Vanessa is performing the exercise with a small ball. Start by standing norma ..read more

What is your favorite Pilates exercise? On the mat I love to do inversion exercises like rollover and on the reformer my favorite is the semi-circle. How did you get hooked on Pilates? I was active and in motion since childhood with after school and weekend activities like swimming, roller skating, gymnastics, and more. During my second year of Physical Therapy school a friend, who is a Pilates teacher, made us all come in early and start the day with a workout. It helped balance out all the sitting during the school day and made me feel more focused and energetic. Soon I ..read more

Soma Pilates – Fostering body awareness, acceptance, and improved performance

John first came to Soma Pilates after persistent back issues, and has made tremendous progress in the years since.  He’s not only become healthier and stronger, but has also become a better, more resilient scuba diver! Q: When did you start pilates and what led you to Soma Pilates? A: I don’t remember, but I injured my back in December of 2013 and struggled for 6 months with a bulging disk (L5/S1). I had a cortisone shot, which helped short term but going to a physical therapist at that time actually made me worse. A friend who was going through the exact same injury suggested Soma Pilates. Client Success Story: Dan Perry
Soma Pilates – Fostering body awareness, acceptance, and improved performance
by Kayleigh Miller

Many of our clients come to Soma from a clinical referral, consistent pain, or dissatisfaction with other movement modalities.  One of our now regular clients, Dan Perry, came to Soma after finishing his physical therapy sessions, wanting to extend his post-rehabilitative process.  He takes privates and small group sessions 2-3 times a week, and his sense of humor and support of other clients is a delight. Q: When did you start Pilates and what led you to Soma? A: I started Pilates about 2 ½ years ago when I was suffering pain from a bulging disk in my low back. My research indicated that the ..read more
