Dear friends, I just wanted to make sure you knew about my latest news: My book! (It’s officially coming out in print tomorrow, and you can probably find it at your local bookstore or library.) This blog is where I first started writing down stories (more than eight years ago!) about my beautiful daughter, and about the new world she opened up to me when she first told me she wasn’t the boy I believed her to be. It’s amazing (and a little surreal) that these stories are now printed in the pages of an actual book. May it spread a little more hope and joy into the lives of children like mine, a ..read more

Dear friends, It’s been almost a year since my last episode.  What a year!  I’m sure it’s felt like several years (or decades?) to many of you, too.  I hope you are healthy and thriving, finding your way through these challenging times.  I hope you are safe and surrounded by love, and I thank you for hanging in there with us, for all these years, through all our ups and downs.  I also thank you for your patience with my long silences between episodes.    For years, people have asked me what I would do when my transgender daughter hit puberty.  Was I goin ..read more

Earlier this year, parents from around the world shared their stories with me about raising their beautiful trans children. I wrote an essay about them, and now you can read it here on the New York Times website. Our kids really ARE everywhere. And wherever YOU are, I hope you will cherish them and protect them – just as these brave parents have done. With love and gratitude, Marlo ..read more

Dear friends, In my last post, I shared the first part of the documentary I helped produce for the BBC World Service. Part 2 is now available here. I’m particularly excited about Part 2, because it shares stories of the children I’ve been thinking about (and wondering about and worrying about) for years: Transgender children in other countries around the globe. Over the past couple of months, I’ve had the rare privilege of hearing the stories of parents who are raising children like mine in other countries, from Italy to India to Japan to South Africa. In hours-long joyful, tearful conversati ..read more

I’ve always wondered how my counterparts were faring in other countries.  I’ve always worried how they might be coping, in places with even bigger challenges than we have faced here in the U.S.  (I know that my daughter and I have been magnificently lucky to find so much love and support.) But what is it like, I wonder, to find yourself raising a transgender child in Asia? Or Africa? Or South America? Or Europe? In this two-part documentary for the BBC World Service, I’ve had the stunning honor of speaking to my counterparts in multiple countries, including India, Columbia, Japan, S ..read more

I have known this day was coming for nearly ten years, ever since my three-year-old child first began to tell me that “he” was actually a girl. My child has been anticipating it, too, for all these years, asking me again and again, “When do I get the medicine to make sure I don’t become a boy, Mama?”  Blocked! And for years, my answer was, “Not for a long time, sweetheart. Not until you’re much older.”  Of course, the years spun by. She turned eleven, then twelve. Her cisgender friends started to get curvy and their moms began telling me in whispered asides that their daughters were ..read more

Dear friends, You may have noticed that I removed my latest episode from the “How to Be a Girl” podcast website and feed.  The episode was about some experiences my daughter has had in middle school. I was proud of the episode, and I worked really hard on it. I also received a lot of supportive feedback about it from listeners, but last week, I deleted it. I wanted to explain why I did this. Basically, Mom made a mistake.  I included material in the episode without getting my daughter’s clear approval in advance.  When she realized what was in the episode, she asked me to take i ..read more

I’m so very excited to announce my book! I love this photo so much. It’s a memoir about my own transition, from clinging to the belief that I had a son to embracing my beautiful transgender daughter. You’ll recognize some of the stories from this blog, but most of it is new. You’ll also get to hear the voice of my daughter and others who have been along with us on this unexpected, frightening, fantastic journey. This book is a love song, dedicated to my precious daughter and to every child asking to be seen for who they truly are – and every parent who has loved a child beyond all reason. Publ ..read more

So much time has passed since my last episode.  I’m sorry to have kept you waiting so very long.  (Oh my, I just checked and it is now just shy of a YEAR since my last episode! Where does the time go?!)  I want to thank you for hanging in there with me.  It’s been a weird and wild year for us, much of it good but much of it very hard.   But we are safe and healthy and wearing our masks, and hoping for better days ahead for our world.  In the meantime, my little girl is growing like a weed. She’s not quite 13, but I already feel like I have a teenager in the house ..read more

M. and Emma! I want you to meet my good friend, Emma. When she was a little girl, she was just like my daughter. But no one knew her for 60 years. I’m so glad she’s here now. You can hear Emma’s story (and the story of her friendship with me and my daughter) in the latest episode of “How to Be a Girl.” I actually recorded this interview with Emma many, many months ago. As I’ve shared already, it’s been a challenging year, and that’s made it difficult to do much work on the podcast. But I’m hanging in there, learning a lot about myself, and I think I’m becoming both tougher and kinder (to mys ..read more
