Society of Graphic Fine Art 103rd Open Exhibition
Pens! Paper! Pencils!

I went up to London earlier this week to visit this year’s SGFA open exhibition. It’s always a great day: we visit the exhibition, go for a very good lunch (possibly including cocktails) and then pop back for the evening’s private view. It still feels very special to have some work on show at Mall Galleries. It’s the fourth year I’ve been and I think the quality of work on show has improved each year. There is an infinite variety of art that can be made by drawing. Some of it is very clever, some of it is very moving and some of it is very beautiful. When I started looking around I took photos ..read more

SGFA 103rd Annual Open Exhibition

The 103rd annual open exhibition of the Society of Graphic Fine Art opens at 12pm this coming Monday (11th March) and runs until Saturday 16th March. It’s at Mall Galleries in central London, just down the road from Buckingham Palace. The online gallery is here and it looks like it’s going to be an absolutely wonderful celebration of drawing in all its forms. I’ve been to the last three exhibitions and really recommend it. It’s become a bit of an annual treat to travel up to the big smoke, see the exhibition and then go for a (very) good meal (and maybe a cocktail or two) before heading home ..read more

Distant Views of Portland
Pens! Paper! Pencils!

Along the section of the Jurassic Coast from the Isle of Purbeck as far as Lyme Regis the Isle of Portland is a constant presence. It’s not a true island, being connected to the Dorset mainland by a narrow causeway and by Chesil Beach, which starts at Portland and ends at the pretty village of Abbotsbury. It’s a fascinating place, shaped by centuries of quarrying and constantly battered by the elements. I hadn’t realised it at the time but it turns out Portland is sitting in the background of quite a few of my drawings. I accidentally made a series of pictures of distant views of Portland, so ..read more

The Purbeck Artisan Yard is a fantastic place in Wareham, Dorset that hosts the work of a number of local artists and makers. It’s full of really wonderful art of every kind. Each month they make spaces available for guest artists and throughout the whole of October I’ve got one of those spaces. I have nine original drawings and four giclée prints at the Yard. It’s open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm and it’s worth a visit. Wareham itself is a wonderful historic town, too. (It’s also where I grew up and where I used to fish ..read more

Society of Graphic Fine Art Open 23

The annual open exhibition of the Society of Graphic Fine Art is a true celebration of drawing in all its forms and is held in the Mall Galleries in London. This year the exhibition ran from 13 to 18 March. This is the fourth year I’ve entered drawings into the exhibition and the first year I’ve entered as an associate member of the society. I had three pictures selected. Living in Dorset, it’s quite an investment of time and money to exhibit in London. It’s involved three trips, one to take the pictures up, one to visit the exhibition while it’s open, and one to collect the pictures after it ..read more
