Despite significant leaps in tobacco harm reduction, there are still around 1.3 billion cigarette smokers in the world. Though the environmental consequences of this habit have been well-documented in research, some smokers may still be underestimating the impact of cigarettes on the planet. One Tobacco Prevention and Cessation study discovered that smokers appear to be less informed about climate change effects and the specific activities that contribute to it. In addition, they are less likely than non-smokers to be informed about their city’s air quality or avoid throwing cigarettes and oth ..read more

Dispersals; on plants, borders, and belonging by Jessica J. Lee examines our perceptions on what it means to be invasive. Lee’s exceptional knowledge and colourful story telling draws parallels between the invasive species of plants that surround us and her own feelings of belonging to any one place. The child of immigrants, Jessica was born in Ontario, and wonders how it is that people and plants come to belong. She traces the travels of plants who have crossed borders as she herself moves from one place to another, finding roots and history as she goes. While tracing the dispersion of her pa ..read more

Rose Nun’s Fart Pastry Recipe (Pets de Nonne)
Greenmoxie Magazine - Adventures in Sustainable Living
by Nikki Fotheringham

Nun’s farts are delicious fried choux pastry balls, essentially beignets. Not to be confused with Pete De Soeur (translated it means farts of the religious sisters) which is more like a mini cinnamon bun with puff pastry. Nuns must be really flatulent to have so many confections named after them, but this one is a quick and easy winner! Originally from France, nun’s farts are also enjoyed in French Canada, the US, England and Spain. The first recorded recipe is in the Oxford University’s Household Encyclopedia from 1859. We have added a little Rose to ours, because a nun’s fart by any oth ..read more

Solar Light Reviews
Greenmoxie Magazine - Adventures in Sustainable Living

We’ve all made forays into the outdoor solar lighting world–I have several around my garden that shed light on paths and garden features. But I don’t take them very seriously. Recently, we decided to install a large outdoor light. This would need to provide substantial lighting on our driveway entrance. We live in the country and it gets really dark at night. There is no ambient lighting and we would need something reliable that would shed significant light on our driveway entrance. Of course we initially thought of an electric light, but running power down the driveway and using such a valuab ..read more

Love Spell Rose Cookie Recipe
Greenmoxie Magazine - Adventures in Sustainable Living
by Nikki Fotheringham

They say that the fastest way to a lover’s heart is through their tummy, which may explain the many ancient love spells and rituals that involve cooking. One sure-fire way to lure a loved one was to bake bread naked under the waxing moon. The dough was to be pressed against the body before baking. This Love Spell Rose Cookie recipe is having none of that! Do whisper the name of the person you love as you place the cookies in the oven to ensure success. 3/4 Cup butter 1/2 Cup white sugar 1/4 Cup brown sugar 1 large egg at room temperature 1 Tbsp rosewater 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 1/2 Cups flour ..read more

Greenmoxie Magazine - Adventures in Sustainable Living

Behold the lemon; the much maligned fruit that definitely doesn’t deserve its status as the least liked of nature’s bounty. I refer of course to phrases like; “The second hand car you bought is a real lemon.” It’s a travesty when you think of all the wee lemon has to offer… Think of all the different cleaning products you use; surface cleaners, window cleaners, carpet cleaners, air and fabric fresheners… the list is endless. Cleaning products are not just bad for the environment; they are bad for you and your family too. Noxious chemical offgassing  is responsible for making your indoor ..read more

As the heat of summer really sets in, all the tomatoes in my veggie garden seem to decide to ripen at once. I don’t mind. There are so many delightful ways eat them, that they never go to waste. So here’s how to slip into something a little more sustainable. Turn your lights down low If you are already turning off the lights and relying on candles to show you in the best light, then good on you, you green living genius!
