What's So Great About Walking, Anyway? The Case for Walking Vs. Driving
This Urban Life With Kids

Driving is faster, right?  I mean, who has time for walking in this modern world?  There aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done, but if we get from place to place as fast as possible, it will help alleviate our time management issues -- or so the reasoning goes. I want to clarify that I don't advocate for walkable neighborhoods out of nostalgia, wishing to return to an earlier time in history.  (Although I do love history.)  There is overwhelming scientific evidence for the benefits of trying to walk more often, to more places, instead of driving.   ..read more

"Don't You Feel Scared to Walk In Your Neighborhood?"
This Urban Life With Kids

The Old Northside, our walkable urban historic neighborhood. This question was put to me recently by a stranger, someone I had just met, my husband's co-worker.  My kids and I were visiting my husband at his office for lunch and a tour of the new public hospital, and conversation had turned to how my husband is a run commuter: he runs the 2.5 miles from home to work at least a couple times per week instead of driving. I was asked if I am also a runner (!).  No, I have never enjoyed running, but I do make a habit of walking regularly, almost daily, around our neighborhood, for exerci ..read more

5 Myths About Raising Kids in the City
This Urban Life With Kids
by Amy Sheldrake Eddy

We have lived in downtown Indy for five years now, and during that time I have been asked many questions about why we live here.  Or rather, I've been asked the same several questions over and over again.  I don't think people who live elsewhere are necessarily ignorant or prejudiced, but there is a general lack of information about what it's really like to raise a young family here in a downtown neighborhood.  So I aim to address that by providing real information, using our daily experiences (and those of other families I know doing the same thing), backed up by number ..read more

Watson Road Bird Preserve, four acres in the middle of a historic neighborhood, established 1925.   First of all, a disclaimer:  Far be it from me to burden all you parents with yet another aspect of child-nurturing to worry about.  I know we are already overwhelmed in the current parenting culture with issues and controversies that add up to make us stressed out, or hyper-vigilant, or confused as to whether we're doing the right thing (or enough of it) for our children.  This is not the sort of blog to make you feel judged or discouraged.  But, if you're at a point i ..read more

Six Markers of a City: Intro to Urbanism, Part I

Here's a little food for thought:  What exactly is urbanism, anyway?  Chances are, if you happen to be a parent of young children, you don't really have time to read whole books on this topic (because I can barely find the time, and it's my passion!).  It turns out that urbanism is a bit hard to define because a whole spectrum of different ideas can be traced back to it.  To narrow down for the purposes of this blog, urbanism is a movement about preserving existing urban areas, cities and neighborhoods, and ensuring that new developments are based on time-tested, tradition ..read more

Happy Juneteenth: a Booklist for Kids

I’ve been thinking about this for a while but of course I didn’t quite get it done on time to post it yesterday to celebrate the holiday Juneteenth. Better late than never? Pain and anguish over racial inequality, oppression, police brutality and other injustices have risen to a fever pitch in the past month unlike anything ever seen before in my lifetime. Many people have written helpful articles and posts and shared links to increase awareness and education. I’m not sure I can contribute anything of value, but my one area of relative expertise happens to be in the world of children’s books ..read more

2020: Pandemic, Racial Injustice, and a Fire // Thoughts and Life Updates

I’m not sure quite what to say or how to say it. In the first couple months of 2020 I was already having a personally difficult year before any of these other things started happening: a devastating global pandemic and economic recession, a wave of police brutality and increased awareness of racial injustice along with an unprecedented cultural response, some weeks of citywide nightly curfews and then a few days ago a sudden and explosive fire devoured our next-door neighbor’s garage and also scorched our garage, backyard and trees. {Oh, I forgot to mention the murder hornets, my seven-yea ..read more
