Looking for some advice... I decided after my rejection from the graduate program at CSU due to my lack of musical skills, I'll still be moving to Fort Collins to try again next year (but mostly to get out of Florida). However, the advising counselor at CSU mentioned I could apply as an undergrade and take courses for the B.M. focused on MT in order to gain the building blocks I need. Mind you, I already have my BA degree in Music (primary instrument is oboe) and I have taken 70% of the courses that they offer (theory, history, etc.). I was actually considering this choice because I'll be abl ..read more

I have been a singer all my life and I currently work in a nursing home. I love working with this population but it is not good pay without a degree. I am looking for some options for going back to school and getting a degree. I have about a year and a half of undergrad completed. I am located in Massachusetts. Any and all advice appreciated! submitted by /u/papajean_ [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello!! I'm sorry I know I've asked this once before but I'm quite nervous about bring interviewed for the MA Music Therapy course. I'm worried about the part where they'd ask me to improvise. I haven't ever done anything like this and was wondering how that would be? Any information with respect to on the spot improvisation questions would be super helpful. Hi there! Been a certified MT-BC going on three years now, and I've recently been intrigued by play therapy and think it would be a great way to expand my practice with kids. I looked into the process of becoming an RPT, and along with some coursework and clinical hours, the Association for Play Therapy lists that you "must also have a current and active state license to provide clinical mental health services in either counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychiatry, psychology, or social work." Does anyone know if MT falls under that umbrella as well? I'm not very hopeful, but I also kn ..read more

Hi! I have a BA in Music Theory & Composition with minors in psychology, human biology, and journalism. I’ve been teaching private guitar, ukulele, and songwriting for the past 10 years and am looking to enter a therapeutic field as I’ve always been interested in mental health and how music can play a big role in that. A lot of the programs I’ve looked into require a bachelors in music therapy though and I’m wondering if an equivalency program would be worth it in my case or if there are masters programs that would accept a BA in music with my minor in psychology. Any info is greatly appr ..read more

Hi all, I’ve been an MT-BC for almost 4 years and have been working in a variety of setting. Currently I’m working in a hospital setting but am finding that management continues to increase my workload. I don’t want to go back to PP work and there is no other MT jobs that aren’t less than 10 HR LTC contracts. I’m feeling burned out and tired - I love being a music therapist, but I’m weighing the impact of my work-life balance /mental health. Curious if anyone has left or taken a leave to shift to another similar or different profession? submitted by /u/UnwindingMT [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello everyone, I am planning to apply for the Music Therapy Master's program at Colorado State University. One of the eligibility requirements is a minimum GPA of 3.25 for a bachelor's degree. Unfortunately, my bachelor's GPA falls below this requirement. However, I hold a master's degree in musicology with a higher GPA. My question is, when I apply to the program, which GPA will they consider? submitted by /u/ali_baba93 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello, I am a student researching metal and music therapy and how metal can be beneficial towards MT. Part of my study is to perform some ethnographic research regarding my topic. Do any MTs use metal as a form of music therapy? If so, what type of patients? Do non-listeners use it? Is metal beneficial at all? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! submitted by /u/user335678665433567 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
