If you know me, you know I love using props in my music therapy sessions. Different props can add elements of variety and novelty into sessions which support engagement and participation, so a good prop is a win-win for everyone. One of my personal favorite props to bring into my school groups is a ring toss game with cones. This game is relatively inexpensive, it’s durable, and easy to clean being it’s plastic. I have a set from the Target dollar spot, but have linked a similar one on Amazon here. My biggest tip for implementing this game into sessions is to add a velcro dot to each cone so ..read more

As I enter my 19th year as a board certified music therapist I still get immense joy out of supporting, learning from and celebrating my clients.  Holidays have always been a fun and easy way to ground my session plans in time. But lately, I’ve been trying to pick monthly themes that can both connect to holiday celebrations but also to my client’s emotional and expressive needs.  We have ALL endured so much in the past few years and no one is exempt from the heaviness we have all been carrying, our clients included.  So, prioritizing a moment of connection in which my clients a ..read more

Music Therapy & Back to School Oh yeah! It’s that time of the year again. The summer has flown by and it is time for all things back to school. For me, looking at the start of a new school year can be very exciting. I think about all the possibilities that the fresh school year may hold. But! I can also get very intimidated thinking about all of the plans, organization, prep work, and so on that it all entails. Last year, I began my first year of employment with Groovy Garfoose very close to the start of the school year. This year, I’ve had some more time to mentally prepare for how to su ..read more

A Quick Note Hello everyone! I hope all is well and life has shown you a little kindness in your days! I feel very grateful for my time at the Groovy Garfoose. Getting to know you and myself as well has been the highlight of this first half of the year! The growth of my self confidence has really shaped my experience during this internship. My confidence had the power to be my greatest enemy or my key to freedom. At times, I’d freeze during sessions, music completely leaving my mind. But once I utilized the tips below, I began to soar! I hope the tips and the chant below will help you during ..read more

Adapted Song Discussion Guide

How it Started Lyric analysis and song discussion applications are some of my favorite interventions to facilitate in music therapy sessions as they can target so many potential areas of growth. From an outside, observational standpoint, it may seem very simple: there are lyric sheets with numbered lines, the song plays, and it’s followed by discussion. Of course, those are the very bare bones of these applications and we know there is so much more that goes into this process. For many people, listening to and reflecting on the lyrics comes naturally. In some settings, clients may need little ..read more
