As the Crime Prevention Research Center has often pointed out, television crime shows seem to think criminals constantly use machine guns to commit crime. Unfortunately, CBS’ SWAT is no different (Season 7, Episode 3, March 1, 2024). This episode shows several machine guns being fired in multiple locations.
In real life, criminals generally use machine guns so rarely that a 2016 survey of prison inmates only broke down the numbers for uses in crime of handguns (11.2%), rifles (0.8%), and shotguns (1.1%). There are few rifles, and the survey did not mention fully automatic weapons. A ..read more

A Montgomery County high school student is charged with what police describe as plans to commit a school shooting.

Andrea Ye, 18, of Rockville, whose preferred name is Alex Ye, is charged with threats of mass violence. Montgomery County Police and the FBI arrested Ye Wednesday.

In a statement, police said the FBI notified the department about a 129-page “manifesto” written by Ye outlining strategies for carrying out a school shooting in Montgomery County. Ye also contemplates targeting an elementary school and says he wants to be famous, police said. . . .

Here is a dramatic case where an elderly woman had no alternative to protect herself from a 39-year-old man other than with a gun.

. . . The incident occurred on March 13 at approximately 2 a.m. local time, according to the prosecuting attorney’s office. The investigation found that Jenneiahn had been asleep in her home when she was “woken up” by [Derek] Condon, . . . who pointed a “gun” at her.
