Aberdeen and Harford Tech’s baseball teams gathered on the pavement splitting the Eagles football and baseball fields for a pregame ceremony. The two squads stood across from one another, all donning royal blue hats with a white ’42’ on the front. Between them was a microphone to serve as the touchpoint of a day KJ Miller has been planning forever. This game was originally scheduled for last Friday –– three days before Major League Baseball’s Jackie Robinson Day –– but was postponed to Thursday evening, three days after the anniversary of Robinson’s major league debut in 1947 at Ebbets Field ..read more

Clinging to a one-goal lead with under 30 seconds left, Towson goalie Alex Hochrein saved a close shot by Catonsville’s Noah Kennedy, chased down the ground ball and cleared it to the other end of the field as the Generals held on for a 6-5 victory. “I’m a very aggressive goalkeeper, not many people do it. I had to help our team and I ran out and picked up the ball and spudded it — that’s what we call it — and it was just on from there,” Hochrein said. “It hit me right in the chest and it was just all the energy builds up and it was awesome.” Hochrein and Catonsville goalie Rory Gibbons b ..read more

No. 8 Liberty girls lacrosse keeps composure, rallies past South Carroll, 14-10: ‘Trust is kind of the key’
The Baltimore Sun

With South Carroll girls lacrosse up a goal on Liberty late in the third quarter, a simple Thursday night game quickly turned into an intense showdown, as fans from both sides got rowdy, instantly creating a playoff-like atmosphere. Liberty coach Tom Brandel, however, remained stoic as he stood unfazed and watched his girls work. Annika Wray hit the back of the net to put the Lions back ahead and they never looked back. Liberty kept the Cavaliers’ offense in check and pulled away for a 14-10 win. “I wasn’t surprised at all we were down to South Carroll,” Brandel said. “We always expect a compe ..read more

The 6-foot-9, 205-pound Gapare seemed to confirm his decision Thursday night when he posted on X, formerly Twitter, a turtle emoji and the number 100 next to it. He then shared two posts announcing his transfer to the Terps. Gapare is the fourth player to join Maryland from elsewhere this offseason. Shooting guard Rodney Rice (Virginia Tech) and point guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie (Belmont) committed to the program last month, and shooting guard Selton Miguel (S ..read more

The Baltimore Sun

Glenelg softball was down to its final out and trailing Reservoir by a run. Coach Anna Pallozzi encouraged her players to remain calm and seek contact. A walk and a single set the table for Rylie Thomas. In that moment, the sophomore’s mind was blank. She was energized by the support of the Gladiators bench and solely focused on getting on base. “It’s so key,” Thomas said of her teammate’s confidence in her. “I love that everybody is hype and saying, ‘Yes, yes, yes.’ That’s what really makes everyone so excited when you’re excited to hit the ball, get on base and score runs.” She delivered wit ..read more

The Baltimore Sun

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A judge has denied a request by the owner of Bob Baffert-trained Arkansas Derby winner Muth for the colt to run in next month’s 150th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Jefferson County Circuit Judge Mitch Perry declined Thursday to grant a temporary injunction to Zedan Racing Stables, which had argued that the ban of Baffert was “illegal.” Muth won the Arkansas Derby on March 30 but is ineligible to receive the 100 points that would have put him in the Run for the Roses because of Baffert’s suspension. ZRS sued Churchill Downs days later. In his ruling, Perry expressed conce ..read more

Several dozen ships lost propulsion in Maryland waters before Key Bridge collapse: ‘You’re basically just drifting’
The Baltimore Sun
by Alex Mann, Lorraine Mirabella

After delivering a load of sugar to the Domino refinery in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor two winters ago, a 567-foot bulk carrier departed for Georgia but didn’t get very far before experiencing engine trouble. Not long after the Nazenin sailed underneath the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a mechanical malfunction cut the flow of cooling water to the ship’s main engine, disrupting the ship’s propulsion. Its crew dropped anchor just outside the channel in the Patapsco River to make quick repairs, according to a Coast Guard incident report. Having replaced a “cracked cylinder liner” the Coast Guard attr ..read more
