Lost.

Year Five. Month One. #SEA You guys, I have to be completely honest. I've been feeling a little lost as of late. Ever since I transitioned from my little regional airline to big mainline dream airline, I've been struggling with a real sense of disconnect. My regional days were all of fourteen small town layovers, a few dozen good folks in my domicile, two aircraft types and a million and a half adventures and smiles and memories. Mainline has been jaw-dropping tropical layovers, big city jet-setting, wonderful benefits and almost ten thousand crewmembers system-wide who come in and out ..read more

Year Five. #PNW. Whether you're an international country-hopping air hostess, a regional puddle-jumping stew or just a jetlagged travel addict, here are a few rules that I've discovered throughout my journey. Here's to creating the (almost) perfect flight attendant life (but embracing the chaos along the way). Be on time for work, always. (But make your date wait an extra five minutes.) Get that cocktail on your layover. (But stop on drink number two.) Learn how to pack, like, really well. Don’t skimp on shoes. Always carry an extra pair of nylons (or trouser socks, for the guys ..read more

Year Four. Month Eleven. #OGG. You may have noticed that I haven't been posting very much these days. It's not that I no longer have a passion for flying, or for writing for that matter. Life has just been moving along so quickly, and I don't want to miss a single moment because I'm worried about my latest Instagram post or editing an article or doing an interview. I still love writing. And I'm flying, more than ever, and loving my dream company and quality of life. It's just that my days on the ground are more precious to me than ever before, and I've really rearranged my priorities. B ..read more

Year Four. Month Eight. #BLI. There was a beautiful sunset tonight. I watched it from my car, while driving between someplace and another place, between airports and airplanes and here and there. I texted my partner Tim about it, and as I did I thought about all the beautiful sunrises and sunsets we had watched together in various places: our first date in Seattle years ago, in Japan and Korea and Mexico while traveling the world together, on our beautiful Whidbey Island where Tim proposed and most recently in Costa Rica, on our honeymoon. Watching the sun appear and disappear with some ..read more

Year Four. Month Seven. #BLI. It does get better, you know. I've been there. The endless airline applications. The "thanks but no thanks" (TBNT) e-mails. The hours spent typing in your job history information, your personal information, your most intimate details, hoping that the summer you spent serving ice cream or the short nanny gig your sophomore year might help you stand out against all of the (thousands; tens of thousands even) other applicants. The rejection. The sliver of hope moments, the invitations to interview, the holding your breath as you purchase a full fare airline tick ..read more

Year Four. Month Six. #PNW. Here's to the broken-hearted. Here's to those of you who got the "TBNT" e-mail. (You know the one I'm talking about.) Here's to that seventh interview. Here's to the cattle call where you didn't even make it past the first round. Here's to the fifth-week-of-training dropouts. Here's to those of you who know exactly which test question you marked incorrectly. (And you'll never forget it.) Here's to that one failed drill. Even the best and brightest get test anxiety. :/ Here's to all the "wrong" answers that sent you packing, sent you home, sen ..read more

Year Four. Month One. #SE. The wind tastes wild. Cold, glacial air sweeps down off the mountains and lands on my tongue; but the essence of ice and adventure dissipates quickly. I want this adventure. I want this life. I want this, now, forever. And I have wanted this for a while. When the recruiters called my name into that small room almost one year ago, I couldn't wait to start my new adventure in the forty-ninth state. But life is funny, and the airline industry is ever changing. Straight Out Of Anchorage. When I assumed that I would be based in Anchorage, I got Seattle ..read more

Year Four. Month One. #SEA. Back in my United Express days as a regional flight attendant :) So, I know that everyone and their mom has an opinion about the guy who got dragged off of a United Express flight last week. Full disclosure: I haven't watched the whole video yet. I've seen the gory photos and heard the audio. I haven't watched it in full because I've seen similar situations unfold in front of me as an active safety professional in the airline industry. That's right, I'm a flight attendant. And I also have an opinion, and if you'd care to listen, I'd love to share ..read more

Year Three. Month Twelve. #PNW. How to become a flight attendant: Apply. Wait. Keep trying. Repeat. I often get e-mails asking me what it's like to be a flight attendant. These questions usually contain similar themes, from "How do I become a flight attendant?" (Answer: APPLY!) to "What is reserve like?" (Answer: WACKY!) or even "How much do flight attendants get paid?" (Answer: Not as much as you would think, especially right off the bat.) But once in a while, I receive an inquiry from a flight attendant partner or family member. And these are some of the questions I cherish the m ..read more
