Warm August days are made for summer reading, and so we thought we’d share a story this month and introduce one of our key staff members at Miracle Foundation. Her name is Niyoshi and her story begins in India… Niyoshi Mehta was lucky. She was born in 1986 in what was then Bombay into an upper middle-class home with a large extended family. From the day she arrived, she was surrounded by support. When Niyoshi was 13 and her older sister was 16, her parents traded their entire Indian life for a life in America, hoping to ensure the best possible education for their two daughters. Most Orphans are Not Orphans When Sita was six months old, she was as small as a newborn. She cried almost constantly from being underfed. Her belly was bloated, but her bones were seen sticking out from under her skin. In a desperate act, her mother carried Sita to a local orphanage and begged them to take her. The little girl was dying, and her teenaged mother could not sit by and watch that happen. It wasn’t abandonment. It was love, actually. She loved her daughter so much, she would even give her away if it meant the little girl would get a chance to live. This is the reality for a major ..read more

Sinet is a vivacious young adult who lives in Cambodia. She has a big laugh and an infectious smile that make her natural enthusiasm all the more endearing. Her Instagram page is an ever-changing gallery of hair styles and colors, reflecting an adventurous spirit and a fun sense of style. In short, she seems happy and self-confident—which is more than a little miraculous considering the painful past she’s lived through. Sinet on right, with her near constant smile. Every year, the world sets aside one special day just for mom. On this day, children everywhere work to let their mother know how important she is. Still, for millions of children living in orphanages, Mother’s Day is a painful reminder that mother is far away. Not dead or long gone. Not even uninterested. In most cases, mothers are simply incapable of caring for their children due to extreme poverty. And so this Mother’s Day, in honor of our 22nd birthday, Miracle Foundation is working to fund the best Mother’s Day gift ever. Our goal, with your help, will be to fund 22 children’s return to t ..read more

The year is 2015, child care institutions (CCIs) are viewed as the best place for a child if their family cannot support them. These children come to the CCI with few personal belongings, but a lot of emotional baggage. They are scared, thrown into an unknown environment with complete strangers. They have left everything familiar behind. Some of the children have escaped days and nights filled with hunger, abusive relationships, dangerous neighborhoods, yet they long for the only life they know. They are burdened with immense fear, grief, sadness, and they live in survival mode emotionally, c ..read more
