When a CNN reporter asked GOP State Superintendent candidate Michele Morrow about her comments on social media concerning public executions and criticisms of public schools, Morrow played a card that she seems to be going to more and more: being trapped in the “gotcha moment.” That CNN “interview” can be found here: Here is her response to that CNN encounter: And as more and more of Morrow’s past comments are being brought to the public eye, the use of the “gotcha moment” defense is becoming more prevalent. It would be interesting to hear what Michele Morrow claims that she said that was ..read more

Below is the salary schedule set for a teacher in North Carolina for the 2022-2023 school year. It was just approved by the governor when he signed off on the state budget. Any teacher new to the profession in the last eight years would never be on the second schedule because newer teachers are not allowed a pay bump for graduate degrees. Notice how the salaries also plateau after year 15. There is no longevity pay included as it does not exist for teachers any longer. Now go back a few years before the Great Recession. Fifteen years ago each salary step would have had an increase in pay. Al ..read more

Long before Catherine Truitt was elected state superintendent, people like Phil Berger and those he controlled began to institute “reforms” into public education without fear of reprisal. Those reforms turned a once progressive state system of public education into one of regression. Eliminating longevity pay, taking away graduate degree pay and career status from newer teachers, revamping the salary scales,  and cutting teacher assistants were just a few of the actions taken to “reform” public education. What Berger and others also started in 2011 and continue to champion today is making ..read more

Our Public Schools Are Better Than Mark Robinson & Michele Morrow Want You to Believe

Our public schools are better than many lawmakers and office candidates portray them to be – people who have never spent time as educators. A lot better. And the problem is not the schools. The problem is the lawmaking body that controls the narrative of how schools are performing. With the constant dialogue that “we must improve schools” and the “need to implement reforms,” it is imperative that we as a taxpaying public seek to understand all of the variables in which schools are and can be measured, and not all of them are quantifiable. And not all of them are reported or allowed to be seen ..read more

The current General Assembly should be very scared of us public school teachers and our supporters. That’s because what had originally looked like an election year to simply resupply the NCGA with more conservatively minded demagoguery has now morphed into a debate about how our state government should serve citizens and fully fund our public schools. This GOP-controlled General Assembly and its governor have unintentionally but successfully turned the focus of November’s elections to the vitality of communities (HB3), the fair treatment of all our citizens (HB2),  and the right to a qual ..read more

What If NC Had A Teacher Working Conditions Survey With Questions About State Leadership?

So, I just completed the 2024 Teacher Working Conditions Survey. Really felt heard. Not really. There is still one glaring shortcoming about the Teacher Working Conditions Survey issued by the state every two years in the spring: it should ask about teachers’ views not only of their school, but of their perceptions of the state leadership. You can see the questions that were administered on the 2022 version and the results here. The results from this 2022 version do nothing more than demonstrate the disconnect that those who want to re-form schools have with the reality of schools ..read more
