I have had a complicated relationship with “rest” over the years. My first awareness of this was when I found myself unable to step down on my foot without excruciating pain. It came out of the blue from one step to the next. One moment I could walk and the next moment I couldn’t. It was quite the ordeal getting across town that day. I had to rest for a before I could take a step. I would take a few more steps and then rest again before walking further.
What is REST?
The first doctor I saw misdiagnosed me and gave me her prescription — go home and REST! I literally asked her “What do you mean ..read more

Pura Vida is Costa Rica’s unofficial national slogan, and you hear it everywhere. The meaning of pura vida is “pure life,” and symbolizes the simple, cheerful outlook and lifestyle of what is often called the happiest country in the world. Pura Vida can be used to say “hello,” “good-bye,” “okay,” “you bet,” “don’t worry, be happy,” or just about any salutation. If you stay in Costa Rica for any amount of time, you begin to feel the essence of Pura Vida calming your nervous system and a smile begin to move across your face.
I lead retreats to Costa Rica every year and do some of my favorite thi ..read more

I have often heard people talk about living life as if it is your last day. But in a recent interview with Suleika Jaouad, author of Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted, I heard her say that we should live life as if it is our first. She is speaking from her experience as someone who was diagnosed with leukemia at age 22 and has faced death up close and personal for many years. She said if you live as if it is your last day, you might be out robbing banks or eating too much ice cream. But if you live as if it is your first day, you will be filled with wonder.

Human relationships are the most rewarding and the most challenging experiences that we will ever have. When these relationships are connected and authentic (heart-centered), they help us feel seen, heard, and acknowledged. When these relationships are ego-driven and self-centered, they can lead to feelings of fear, jealousy, hurt, and anger. Despite how important these human interactions are, we get little to no training in how to connect with one another unless we earnestly seek it out.

January is replete with messages on how to improve yourself with new exercise routines, meditation/yoga courses, and dieting/weight loss advice. Of course, we know from experience and from the data that traditional New Year’s resolutions often last less than the month in which they were made. But year after year people jump on board and try to make some change they have decided is a good idea for growth and wellbeing.
I don’t blame you for jumping on the New Year bandwagon. I use January as a time to review and renew my commitment to not drinking for the month, hoping it will stick for longer ..read more

I recently took a chance. Despite being discouraged by some people, I signed up to teach a yoga retreat at a new location — on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica at the beach!! I listened to my gut, and I was right. It was AMAZING and TRANSFORMATIONAL. So much so that I already signed up to go back. There is so much I want to do again and even more that I haven’t discovered there. Why don’t you come with me and find out what I learned about this secret part of Costa Rica? Give yourself a gift this holiday season!! And, take advantage of my limited-time-only discount of $200 until ..read more

Every morning when I wake up, my mind does not start with thoughts of gratitude. If you’re anything like me, your mind starts thinking about what went wrong yesterday, what could go wrong today, and what might go wrong tomorrow. This is not a great way to start the day.
What I have learned from my mindfulness training, is that I cannot stop the thoughts that come up in my head. These thoughts are based on conditioned patterns from years of living in a world that trains us to be worried, anxious, and afraid. We worry about all kinds of things. What we did, what we could have done better ..read more

Among the ancient healing modalities found in Energy Medicine, the theories and practices of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are front and center. As a psychologist, it is the study of the Five Elements from TCM which I have found most fascinating. While I learned many theories of personality in my psychology training, I have learned more about people through the Five Elements than I have through almost anything else. Each element is associated with a season, direction, time of day, color, organs, sound of voice, emotions (maladapted and adapted), family dynamic, and even taste.

NOTE TO START: This will be the beginning of a new era of writing which will focus on my two current areas of interest — Yoga and Energy Medicine. I have been teaching yoga in the Kripalu tradition for 25 years and, for the past three years, I have been teaching an Energy Medicine Yoga Class. Even more recently, I have started a certificate program in Eden Energy Medicine which has deepened my understanding of this powerful ancient healing modality. My website will still host the mindful eating (books and meditations) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program (meditations and yoga practic ..read more
