Despite an increase in outpatient total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA), large-scale data are lacking on current practice for antibiotic prophylaxis prescribing. We aimed to describe current oral antibiotic prophylaxis practices nationally for outpatient THA and TKA ..read more

Oral corticosteroids are the primary treatment for several autoimmune conditions. The risk of long-term implant, bone health, and infectious-related complications in patients taking chronic oral corticosteroids before total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is unknown. We compared the 10-year cumulative incidence of revision, periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), fragility fracture (FF), and periprosthetic fracture (PPF) following TKA in patients who had and did not have preoperative chronic oral corticosteroid use ..read more

Adjunctive screw fixation has been shown to be reliable in achieving acetabular component stability in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA). The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of inferior screw placement on acetabular component failure following revision THA. We hypothesized that inferior screw fixation would decrease acetabular failure rates ..read more

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) adverse events among patients who have dental diagnoses remain unclear. We sought to determine if dental caries or dental implant placements increased: 1) 90-day medical complications; 2) 90-day readmissions; and 3) 2-year implant-related complications, including periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) after THA ..read more

We read with great interest the article by Sarpong et al entitled: “Dislocation following anterior and posterior total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the setting of spinal deformity and stiffness: evolving trends using a high-risk protocol at a single tertiary center” [1]. This study concluded that in patients who have spinal stiffness, classified as the 2B-hip spine group, the history of lumbar fusion is significantly associated with a higher dislocation rate, while the surgical approach and utilizing dual mobility bearing were not significantly associated with the risk of dislocation ..read more
