If you’re even tangentially connected to the cycling world, you’ve probably heard of Pearl iZUMi. For more than 60 years, they’ve been raising the bar for technical apparel innovation, driven to make the riding experience more comfortable, faster, and safer. In 2018, the company redefined its mission, vision, and values to align with its goals to be a responsible corporate citizen — and they’ve been making significant strides (or shall we say pedals) toward increasing the positive social and environmental impact of its brand. We teamed up with Portland, OR-based company Cycle Dog to create an adorably practical line of dog gear upcycled from excess materials and recycled bicycle tire tubes. Since 2009, Cycle Dog has reclaimed hundreds of thousands of discarded inner tube rubber that would otherwise be thrown away to create their innovative gear for dogs. Cycle Dog’s founder Lanette Fidrych began her dog gear journey by collecting used bike tubes from Portland area bike shops and learning to sew them at home. After many R&D sessions, she created Cycle Dog’s iconic inner tube-backed dog collar. More than just ec ..read more

We sat down with Executive Director of the Loopt Foundation Scott Welch to hear how he's partnering with the community to take on textile waste one closet at a time. The philosophy is simple: by choosing to wear what we already have instead of buying new clothes, we can each participate in tackling textile waste in our own homes. The Loopt Foundation has recently partnered with EcoAthletes to raise awareness around conscious clothing decisions — and he invites everyone to join their pledge to Swear to Wear All Garments ..read more

Water Restoration on the Middle Deschutes River
Looptworks | Upcycled Bags, Packs & Accessories

The Middle Deschutes River is a 35-mile section of the iconic Deschutes River that flows between the city of Bend and Lake Billy Chinook, Oregon. In this section of the river, deep canyons and public lands comprise one of the most scenic desert canyons in the state of Oregon. Red-band trout, otters, ospreys, and myriad wildlife species inhabit this section of river and depend on clean, healthy flows of water. However, historically most of the flow to the middle Deschutes River was diverted near the City of Bend to serve agricultural needs throughout central Oregon. Thanks to partnerships with ..read more

Gettin’ Scrappy: Turning Carhartt Excess Into Canvas Bags
Looptworks | Upcycled Bags, Packs & Accessories
by Carolyn White

We’ll be the first to admit: even we end up with excess EXCESS materials. Our design process begins with ensuring we leave as little excess as possible after a project. Even so, we occasionally find ourselves with scraps hanging out in our workshop awaiting their destiny. Recently, our excess was Carhartt canvas. We determined that we had enough scraps to create a limited-edition run of Looptworks canvas slings. Designed durably to outlast average slings out there, our upcycled canvas collection is the latest creation from our Portland-based workshop. See the Upcycled Canvas Sling collection ..read more

Intro to Circularity: Here's Why Closing the Loop Can Save Our Planet

When it comes to the responsible production of a product, it’s important to take a step back and look at the entire process. This includes how materials for a product are sourced, how the product is made, what it’s made with, and most importantly (this step is most often overlooked)  — what happens when a product is no longer wanted or able to be used for its original purpose.  At the most basic level, circularity means taking every single step of a product’s life into consideration and ensuring that it will stay out of the landfill forever. When Lo & Sons, an Asian American family-owned maker of travel bags, was faced with a pile of returned (and otherwise unsellable) Catalina bags, they called up Looptworks to keep these materials out of the landfill. Founded in 2010 by Helen, Jan, and Derek Lo, the New York based company is on a mission to create stylish and thoughtfully designed travel bags in a socially and environmentally responsible way. The launch of their first upcycled collection with Looptworks is Lo & Sons’ first step towards incorporating circularity into their production process long term. “In the 12 years ..read more
